Surah Ash-Shams (Arabic: سورة Ash-Shams, "The Sun") is the 91 chapter (surah) of the Qur'an, containing 15 verses (ayahs). It is classified as a Meccan Surah, meaning it is historically understood to have been revealed during the Meccan Period (610–622 CE) of the prophecy.

Introduction

Surah Ash-Shams ("The Sun") is chapter 91 of 114 in the Qur'an. The full Arabic text, English translation and transliteration of all 15 verses are given below, with verse-by-verse Tafsir available on each ayah.

Text and Translation

Verse 91:1

وَالشَّمۡسِ وَضُحٰىهَاۙࣕ‏

wal-shamsi waḍuḥāhā

By the sun and its brightness

Verse 91:2

وَالۡقَمَرِ اِذَا تَلٰىهَاۙࣕ‏

wal-qamari idhā talāhā

And [by] the moon when it follows it

Verse 91:3

وَالنَّهَارِ اِذَا جَلّٰىهَاۙࣕ‏

wal-nahāri idhā jallāhā

And [by] the day when it displays it

Verse 91:4

وَالَّيۡلِ اِذَا يَغۡشٰىهَاۙࣕ‏

wa-al-layli idhā yaghshāhā

And [by] the night when it covers it

Verse 91:5

وَالسَّمَآءِ وَمَا بَنٰىهَاۙࣕ‏

wal-samāi wamā banāhā

And [by] the sky and He who constructed it

Verse 91:6

وَالۡاَرۡضِ وَمَا طَحٰىهَاۙࣕ‏

wal-arḍi wamā ṭaḥāhā

And [by] the earth and He who spread it

Verse 91:7

وَنَفۡسٍ وَّمَا سَوّٰىهَاۙࣕ‏

wanafsin wamā sawwāhā

And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it

Verse 91:8

فَاَلۡهَمَهَا فُجُوۡرَهَا وَتَقۡوٰىهَاۙࣕ‏

fa-alhamahā fujūrahā wataqwāhā

And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness

Verse 91:9

قَدۡ اَفۡلَحَ مَنۡ زَكّٰىهَاۙࣕ‏

qad aflaḥa man zakkāhā

He has succeeded who purifies it

Verse 91:10

وَقَدۡ خَابَ مَنۡ دَسّٰىهَاؕ‏

waqad khāba man dassāhā

And he has failed who instills it [with corruption]

Verse 91:11

كَذَّبَتۡ ثَمُوۡدُ بِطَغۡوٰىهَا٘ۙࣕ‏

Thamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression

Verse 91:12

اِذِ انۭۡ بَعَثَ اَشۡقٰىهَاۙࣕ‏

When the most wretched of them was sent forth

Verse 91:13

فَقَالَ لَهُمۡ رَسُوۡلُ اللّٰهِ نَاقَةَ اللّٰهِ وَسُقۡيٰهَاؕ‏

And the messenger of Allah [Salih] said to them, "[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allah or [prevent her from] her drink

Verse 91:14

فَكَذَّبُوۡهُ فَعَقَرُوۡهَا ࣢ۙࣕ فَدَمۡدَمَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ رَبُّهُمۡ بِذَنۭۡ بِهِمۡ فَسَوّٰىهَاۙࣕ‏

But they denied him and hamstrung her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them]

Verse 91:15

وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقۡبٰهَاࣖ‏

And He does not fear the consequence thereof
