Surah Al-Balad (Arabic: سورة Al-Balad, "The City") is the 90 chapter (surah) of the Qur'an, containing 20 verses (ayahs). It is classified as a Meccan Surah, meaning it is historically understood to have been revealed during the Meccan Period (610–622 CE) of the prophecy.

Introduction

Surah Al-Balad ("The City") is chapter 90 of 114 in the Qur'an. The full Arabic text, English translation and transliteration of all 20 verses are given below, with verse-by-verse Tafsir available on each ayah.

Text and Translation

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Bismi-llāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm
Verse 90:1
لَا٘ اُقۡسِمُ بِهٰذَا الۡبَلَدِۙ‏
lā uq'simu bihādhā l-baladi
I swear by this city, Makkah
Verse 90:2
وَاَنۡتَ حِلٌّۭ بِهٰذَا الۡبَلَدِۙ‏
wa-anta ḥillun bihādhā l-baladi
And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city
Verse 90:3
وَوَالِدٍ وَّمَا وَلَدَۙ‏
wawālidin wamā walada
And [by] the father and that which was born [of him]
Verse 90:4
لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا الۡاِنۡسَانَ فِيۡ كَبَدٍؕ‏
laqad khalaqnā l-insāna fī kabadin
We have certainly created man into hardship
Verse 90:5
اَيَحۡسَبُ اَنۡ لَّنۡ يَّقۡدِرَ عَلَيۡهِ اَحَدٌۘ‏
ayaḥsabu an lan yaqdira ʿalayhi aḥadun
Does he think that never will anyone overcome him
Verse 90:6
يَقُوۡلُ اَهۡلَكۡتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًاؕ‏
yaqūlu ahlaktu mālan lubadan
He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance
Verse 90:7
اَيَحۡسَبُ اَنۡ لَّمۡ يَرَهٗ٘ اَحَدٌؕ‏
ayaḥsabu an lam yarahu aḥadun
Does he think that no one has seen him
Verse 90:8
اَلَمۡ نَجۡعَلۡ لَّهٗ عَيۡنَيۡنِۙ‏
alam najʿal lahu ʿaynayni
Have We not made for him two eyes
Verse 90:9
وَلِسَانًا وَّشَفَتَيۡنِۙ‏
walisānan washafatayni
And a tongue and two lips
Verse 90:10
وَهَدَيۡنٰهُ النَّجۡدَيۡنِۚ‏
wahadaynāhu l-najdayni
And have shown him the two ways
Verse 90:11
فَلَا اقۡتَحَمَ الۡعَقَبَةَؗۖ‏
But he has not broken through the difficult pass
Verse 90:12
وَمَا٘ اَدۡرٰىكَ مَا الۡعَقَبَةُؕ‏
And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass
Verse 90:13
فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍۙ‏
It is the freeing of a slave
Verse 90:14
اَوۡ اِطۡعٰمٌ فِيۡ يَوۡمٍ ذِيۡ مَسۡغَبَةٍۙ‏
Or feeding on a day of severe hunger
Verse 90:15
يَّتِيۡمًا ذَا مَقۡرَبَةٍۙ‏
An orphan of near relationship
Verse 90:16
اَوۡ مِسۡكِيۡنًا ذَا مَتۡرَبَةٍؕ‏
Or a needy person in misery
Verse 90:17
ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا وَتَوَاصَوۡا بِالصَّبۡرِ وَتَوَاصَوۡا بِالۡمَرۡحَمَةِؕ‏
And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion
Verse 90:18
اُولٰٓئِكَ اَصۡحٰبُ الۡمَيۡمَنَةِؕ‏
Those are the companions of the right
Verse 90:19
وَالَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡا بِاٰيٰتِنَا هُمۡ اَصۡحٰبُ الۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِؕ‏
But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left
Verse 90:20
عَلَيۡهِمۡ نَارٌ مُّؤۡصَدَةٌࣖ‏
Over them will be fire closed in
