Surah Al-Fajr (Arabic: سورة Al-Fajr, "The Dawn") is the 89 chapter (surah) of the Qur'an, containing 30 verses (ayahs). It is classified as a Meccan Surah, meaning it is historically understood to have been revealed during the Meccan Period (610–622 CE) of the prophecy.
Introduction
Surah Al-Fajr ("The Dawn") is chapter 89 of 114 in the Qur'an. The full Arabic text, English translation and transliteration of all 30 verses are given below, with verse-by-verse Tafsir available on each ayah.
Text and Translation
Verse 89:1
وَالۡفَجۡرِۙ
wal-fajri
By the dawn
Verse 89:2
وَلَيَالٍ عَشۡرٍۙ
walayālin ʿashrin
And [by] ten nights
Verse 89:3
وَّالشَّفۡعِ وَالۡوَتۡرِۙ
wal-shafʿi wal-watri
And [by] the even [number] and the odd
Verse 89:4
وَالَّيۡلِ اِذَا يَسۡرِۚ
wa-al-layli idhā yasri
And [by] the night when it passes
Verse 89:5
هَلۡ فِيۡ ذٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِّذِيۡ حِجۡرٍؕ
hal fī dhālika qasamun lidhī ḥij'rin
Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception
Verse 89:6
اَلَمۡ تَرَ كَيۡفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍۙࣕ
alam tara kayfa faʿala rabbuka biʿādin
Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with 'Aad
Verse 89:7
اِرَمَ ذَاتِ الۡعِمَادِۙࣕ
irama dhāti l-ʿimādi
[With] Iram - who had lofty pillars
Verse 89:8
الَّتِيۡ لَمۡ يُخۡلَقۡ مِثۡلُهَا فِي الۡبِلَادِۙࣕ
allatī lam yukh'laq mith'luhā fī l-bilādi
The likes of whom had never been created in the land
Verse 89:9
وَثَمُوۡدَ الَّذِيۡنَ جَابُوا الصَّخۡرَ بِالۡوَادِۙࣕ
wathamūda alladhīna jābū l-ṣakhra bil-wādi
And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley
Verse 89:10
وَفِرۡعَوۡنَ ذِي الۡاَوۡتَادِۙࣕ
wafir'ʿawna dhī l-awtādi
And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes
Verse 89:11
الَّذِيۡنَ طَغَوۡا فِي الۡبِلَادِۙࣕ
[All of] whom oppressed within the lands
Verse 89:12
فَاَكۡثَرُوۡا فِيۡهَا الۡفَسَادَۙࣕ
And increased therein the corruption
Verse 89:13
فَصَبَّ عَلَيۡهِمۡ رَبُّكَ سَوۡطَ عَذَابٍۙۚ
So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment
Verse 89:14
اِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِالۡمِرۡصَادِؕ
Indeed, your Lord is in observation
Verse 89:15
فَاَمَّا الۡاِنۡسَانُ اِذَا مَا ابۡتَلٰىهُ رَبُّهٗ فَاَكۡرَمَهٗ وَنَعَّمَهٗ ۙ فَيَقُوۡلُ رَبِّيۡ٘ اَكۡرَمَنِؕ
And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me
Verse 89:16
وَاَمَّا٘ اِذَا مَا ابۡتَلٰىهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيۡهِ رِزۡقَهٗ ۙ فَيَقُوۡلُ رَبِّيۡ٘ اَهَانَنِۚ
But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me
Verse 89:17
كَلَّا بَلۡ لَّا تُكۡرِمُوۡنَ الۡيَتِيۡمَۙ
No! But you do not honor the orphan
Verse 89:18
وَلَا تَحٰٓضُّوۡنَ عَلٰي طَعَامِ الۡمِسۡكِيۡنِۙ
And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor
Verse 89:19
وَتَاۡكُلُوۡنَ التُّرَاثَ اَكۡلًا لَّمًّاۙ
And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether
Verse 89:20
وَّتُحِبُّوۡنَ الۡمَالَ حُبًّا جَمًّاؕ
And you love wealth with immense love
Verse 89:21
كَلَّا٘ اِذَا دُكَّتِ الۡاَرۡضُ دَكًّا دَكًّاۙ
No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed
Verse 89:22
وَّجَآءَ رَبُّكَ وَالۡمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّاۚ
And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank
Verse 89:23
وَجِايۡٓءَ يَوۡمَئِذٍۭ بِجَهَنَّمَ ۙ يَوۡمَئِذٍ يَّتَذَكَّرُ الۡاِنۡسَانُ وَاَنّٰي لَهُ الذِّكۡرٰيؕ
And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance
Verse 89:24
يَقُوۡلُ يٰلَيۡتَنِيۡ قَدَّمۡتُ لِحَيَاتِيۡۚ
He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life
Verse 89:25
فَيَوۡمَئِذٍ لَّا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهٗ٘ اَحَدٌۙ
So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment
Verse 89:26
وَّلَا يُوۡثِقُ وَثَاقَهٗ٘ اَحَدٌؕ
And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers]
Verse 89:27
يٰ٘اَيَّتُهَا النَّفۡسُ الۡمُطۡمَئِنَّةُۙࣗ
[To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul
Verse 89:28
ارۡجِعِيۡ٘ اِلٰي رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرۡضِيَّةًۚ
Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him]
Verse 89:29
فَادۡخُلِيۡ فِيۡ عِبٰدِيۡۙ
And enter among My [righteous] servants
Verse 89:30
وَادۡخُلِيۡ جَنَّتِيۡࣖ
And enter My Paradise
