Surah Al-Ghashiyah (Arabic: سورة Al-Ghashiyah, "The Overwhelming") is the 88 chapter (surah) of the Qur'an, containing 26 verses (ayahs). It is classified as a Meccan Surah, meaning it is historically understood to have been revealed during the Meccan Period (610–622 CE) of the prophecy.

Introduction

Surah Al-Ghashiyah ("The Overwhelming") is chapter 88 of 114 in the Qur'an. The full Arabic text, English translation and transliteration of all 26 verses are given below, with verse-by-verse Tafsir available on each ayah.

Text and Translation

Verse 88:1

هَلۡ اَتٰىكَ حَدِيۡثُ الۡغَاشِيَةِؕ‏

hal atāka ḥadīthu l-ghāshiyati

Has there reached you the report of the Overwhelming [event]

Verse 88:2

وُجُوۡهٌ يَّوۡمَئِذٍ خَاشِعَةٌۙ‏

wujūhun yawma-idhin khāshiʿatun

[Some] faces, that Day, will be humbled

Verse 88:3

عَامِلَةٌ نَّاصِبَةٌۙ‏

ʿāmilatun nāṣibatun

Working [hard] and exhausted

Verse 88:4

تَصۡلٰي نَارًا حَامِيَةًۙ‏

taṣlā nāran ḥāmiyatan

They will [enter to] burn in an intensely hot Fire

Verse 88:5

تُسۡقٰي مِنۡ عَيۡنٍ اٰنِيَةٍؕ‏

tus'qā min ʿaynin āniyatin

They will be given drink from a boiling spring

Verse 88:6

لَيۡسَ لَهُمۡ طَعَامٌ اِلَّا مِنۡ ضَرِيۡعٍۙ‏

laysa lahum ṭaʿāmun illā min ḍarīʿin

For them there will be no food except from a poisonous, thorny plant

Verse 88:7

لَّا يُسۡمِنُ وَلَا يُغۡنِيۡ مِنۡ جُوۡعٍؕ‏

lā yus'minu walā yugh'nī min jūʿin

Which neither nourishes nor avails against hunger

Verse 88:8

وُجُوۡهٌ يَّوۡمَئِذٍ نَّاعِمَةٌۙ‏

wujūhun yawma-idhin nāʿimatun

[Other] faces, that Day, will show pleasure

Verse 88:9

لِّسَعۡيِهَا رَاضِيَةٌۙ‏

lisaʿyihā rāḍiyatun

With their effort [they are] satisfied

Verse 88:10

فِيۡ جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍۙ‏

fī jannatin ʿāliyatin

In an elevated garden

Verse 88:11

لَّا تَسۡمَعُ فِيۡهَا لَاغِيَةًؕ‏

Wherein they will hear no unsuitable speech

Verse 88:12

فِيۡهَا عَيۡنٌ جَارِيَةٌۘ‏

Within it is a flowing spring

Verse 88:13

فِيۡهَا سُرُرٌ مَّرۡفُوۡعَةٌۙ‏

Within it are couches raised high

Verse 88:14

وَّاَكۡوَابٌ مَّوۡضُوۡعَةٌۙ‏

And cups put in place

Verse 88:15

وَّنَمَارِقُ مَصۡفُوۡفَةٌۙ‏

And cushions lined up

Verse 88:16

وَّزَرَابِيُّ مَبۡثُوۡثَةٌؕ‏

And carpets spread around

Verse 88:17

اَفَلَا يَنۡظُرُوۡنَ اِلَي الۡاِبِلِ كَيۡفَ خُلِقَتۡࣟ‏

Then do they not look at the camels - how they are created

Verse 88:18

وَاِلَي السَّمَآءِ كَيۡفَ رُفِعَتۡࣟ‏

And at the sky - how it is raised

Verse 88:19

وَاِلَي الۡجِبَالِ كَيۡفَ نُصِبَتۡࣟ‏

And at the mountains - how they are erected

Verse 88:20

وَاِلَي الۡاَرۡضِ كَيۡفَ سُطِحَتۡ‏

And at the earth - how it is spread out

Verse 88:21

فَذَكِّرۡࣞ اِنَّمَا٘ اَنۡتَ مُذَكِّرٌؕ‏

So remind, [O Muhammad]; you are only a reminder

Verse 88:22

لَسۡتَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ بِمُصَۜيۡطِرٍۙ‏

You are not over them a controller

Verse 88:23

اِلَّا مَنۡ تَوَلّٰي وَكَفَرَۙ‏

However, he who turns away and disbelieves

Verse 88:24

فَيُعَذِّبُهُ اللّٰهُ الۡعَذَابَ الۡاَكۡبَرَؕ‏

Then Allah will punish him with the greatest punishment

Verse 88:25

اِنَّ اِلَيۡنَا٘ اِيَابَهُمۡۙ‏

Indeed, to Us is their return

Verse 88:26

ثُمَّ اِنَّ عَلَيۡنَا حِسَابَهُمۡࣖ‏

Then indeed, upon Us is their account
