Surah Al-Buruj (Arabic: سورة Al-Buruj, "The Mansions of the Stars") is the 85 chapter (surah) of the Qur'an, containing 22 verses (ayahs). It is classified as a Meccan Surah, meaning it is historically understood to have been revealed during the Meccan Period (610–622 CE) of the prophecy.

Introduction

Surah Al-Buruj ("The Mansions of the Stars") is chapter 85 of 114 in the Qur'an. The full Arabic text, English translation and transliteration of all 22 verses are given below, with verse-by-verse Tafsir available on each ayah.

Text and Translation

Verse 85:1

وَالسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ الۡبُرُوۡجِۙ‏

wal-samāi dhāti l-burūji

By the sky containing great stars

Verse 85:2

وَالۡيَوۡمِ الۡمَوۡعُوۡدِۙ‏

wal-yawmi l-mawʿūdi

And [by] the promised Day

Verse 85:3

وَشَاهِدٍ وَّمَشۡهُوۡدٍؕ‏

washāhidin wamashhūdin

And [by] the witness and what is witnessed

Verse 85:4

قُتِلَ اَصۡحٰبُ الۡاُخۡدُوۡدِۙ‏

qutila aṣḥābu l-ukh'dūdi

Cursed were the companions of the trench

Verse 85:5

النَّارِ ذَاتِ الۡوَقُوۡدِۙ‏

al-nāri dhāti l-waqūdi

[Containing] the fire full of fuel

Verse 85:6

اِذۡ هُمۡ عَلَيۡهَا قُعُوۡدٌۙ‏

idh hum ʿalayhā quʿūdun

When they were sitting near it

Verse 85:7

وَّهُمۡ عَلٰي مَا يَفۡعَلُوۡنَ بِالۡمُؤۡمِنِيۡنَ شُهُوۡدٌؕ‏

wahum ʿalā mā yafʿalūna bil-mu'minīna shuhūdun

And they, to what they were doing against the believers, were witnesses

Verse 85:8

وَمَا نَقَمُوۡا مِنۡهُمۡ اِلَّا٘ اَنۡ يُّؤۡمِنُوۡا بِاللّٰهِ الۡعَزِيۡزِ الۡحَمِيۡدِۙ‏

wamā naqamū min'hum illā an yu'minū bil-lahi l-ʿazīzi l-ḥamīdi

And they resented them not except because they believed in Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy

Verse 85:9

الَّذِيۡ لَهٗ مُلۡكُ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضِؕ وَاللّٰهُ عَلٰي كُلِّ شَيۡءٍ شَهِيۡدٌؕ‏

alladhī lahu mul'ku l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wal-lahu ʿalā kulli shayin shahīdun

To whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And Allah, over all things, is Witness

Verse 85:10

اِنَّ الَّذِيۡنَ فَتَنُوا الۡمُؤۡمِنِيۡنَ وَالۡمُؤۡمِنٰتِ ثُمَّ لَمۡ يَتُوۡبُوۡا فَلَهُمۡ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابُ الۡحَرِيۡقِؕ‏

inna alladhīna fatanū l-mu'minīna wal-mu'mināti thumma lam yatūbū falahum ʿadhābu jahannama walahum ʿadhābu l-ḥarīqi

Indeed, those who have tortured the believing men and believing women and then have not repented will have the punishment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the Burning Fire

Verse 85:11

اِنَّ الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ لَهُمۡ جَنّٰتٌ تَجۡرِيۡ مِنۡ تَحۡتِهَا الۡاَنۡهٰرُؕ ذٰلِكَ الۡفَوۡزُ الۡكَبِيۡرُؕ‏

Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds will have gardens beneath which rivers flow. That is the great attainment

Verse 85:12

اِنَّ بَطۡشَ رَبِّكَ لَشَدِيۡدٌؕ‏

Indeed, the vengeance of your Lord is severe

Verse 85:13

اِنَّهٗ هُوَ يُبۡدِئُ وَيُعِيۡدُۚ‏

Indeed, it is He who originates [creation] and repeats

Verse 85:14

وَهُوَ الۡغَفُوۡرُ الۡوَدُوۡدُۙ‏

And He is the Forgiving, the Affectionate

Verse 85:15

ذُو الۡعَرۡشِ الۡمَجِيۡدُۙ‏

Honorable Owner of the Throne

Verse 85:16

فَعَّالٌ لِّمَا يُرِيۡدُؕ‏

Effecter of what He intends

Verse 85:17

هَلۡ اَتٰىكَ حَدِيۡثُ الۡجُنُوۡدِۙ‏

Has there reached you the story of the soldiers

Verse 85:18

فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَثَمُوۡدَؕ‏

[Those of] Pharaoh and Thamud

Verse 85:19

بَلِ الَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡا فِيۡ تَكۡذِيۡبٍۙ‏

But they who disbelieve are in [persistent] denial

Verse 85:20

وَّاللّٰهُ مِنۡ وَّرَآئِهِمۡ مُّحِيۡطٌۚ‏

While Allah encompasses them from behind

Verse 85:21

بَلۡ هُوَ قُرۡاٰنٌ مَّجِيۡدٌۙ‏

But this is an honored Qur'an

Verse 85:22

فِيۡ لَوۡحٍ مَّحۡفُوۡظٍࣖ‏

[Inscribed] in a Preserved Slate
