Surah 'Abasa (Arabic: سورة 'Abasa, "He Frowned") is the 80 chapter (surah) of the Qur'an, containing 42 verses (ayahs). It is classified as a Meccan Surah, meaning it is historically understood to have been revealed during the Meccan Period (610–622 CE) of the prophecy.

Introduction

Surah 'Abasa ("He Frowned") is chapter 80 of 114 in the Qur'an. The full Arabic text, English translation and transliteration of all 42 verses are given below, with verse-by-verse Tafsir available on each ayah.

Text and Translation

Verse 80:1

عَبَسَ وَتَوَلّٰ٘يۙ‏

ʿabasa watawallā

The Prophet frowned and turned away

Verse 80:2

اَنۡ جَآءَهُ الۡاَعۡمٰيؕ‏

an jāahu l-aʿmā

Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]

Verse 80:3

وَمَا يُدۡرِيۡكَ لَعَلَّهٗ يَزَّكّٰ٘يۙ‏

wamā yud'rīka laʿallahu yazzakkā

But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified

Verse 80:4

اَوۡ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنۡفَعَهُ الذِّكۡرٰيؕ‏

aw yadhakkaru fatanfaʿahu l-dhik'rā

Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him

Verse 80:5

اَمَّا مَنِ اسۡتَغۡنٰيۙ‏

ammā mani is'taghnā

As for he who thinks himself without need

Verse 80:6

فَاَنۡتَ لَهٗ تَصَدّٰيؕ‏

fa-anta lahu taṣaddā

To him you give attention

Verse 80:7

وَمَا عَلَيۡكَ اَلَّا يَزَّكّٰيؕ‏

wamā ʿalayka allā yazzakkā

And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified

Verse 80:8

وَاَمَّا مَنۡ جَآءَكَ يَسۡعٰيۙ‏

wa-ammā man jāaka yasʿā

But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]

Verse 80:9

وَهُوَ يَخۡشٰيۙ‏

wahuwa yakhshā

While he fears [Allah]

Verse 80:10

فَاَنۡتَ عَنۡهُ تَلَهّٰيۚ‏

fa-anta ʿanhu talahhā

From him you are distracted

Verse 80:11

كَلَّا٘ اِنَّهَا تَذۡكِرَةٌۚ‏

No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder

Verse 80:12

فَمَنۡ شَآءَ ذَكَرَهٗۘ‏

So whoever wills may remember it

Verse 80:13

فِيۡ صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍۙ‏

[It is recorded] in honored sheets

Verse 80:14

مَّرۡفُوۡعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍۙ‏

Exalted and purified

Verse 80:15

ۭ بِاَيۡدِيۡ سَفَرَةٍۙ‏

[Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels

Verse 80:16

كِرَامٍۭ بَرَرَةٍؕ‏

Noble and dutiful

Verse 80:17

قُتِلَ الۡاِنۡسَانُ مَا٘ اَكۡفَرَهٗؕ‏

Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he

Verse 80:18

مِنۡ اَيِّ شَيۡءٍ خَلَقَهٗؕ‏

From what substance did He create him

Verse 80:19

مِنۡ نُّطۡفَةٍؕ خَلَقَهٗ فَقَدَّرَهٗۙ‏

From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him

Verse 80:20

ثُمَّ السَّبِيۡلَ يَسَّرَهٗۙ‏

Then He eased the way for him

Verse 80:21

ثُمَّ اَمَاتَهٗ فَاَقۡبَرَهٗۙ‏

Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him

Verse 80:22

ثُمَّ اِذَا شَآءَ اَنۡشَرَهٗؕ‏

Then when He wills, He will resurrect him

Verse 80:23

كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقۡضِ مَا٘ اَمَرَهٗؕ‏

No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him

Verse 80:24

فَلۡيَنۡظُرِ الۡاِنۡسَانُ اِلٰي طَعَامِهٖ٘ۙ‏

Then let mankind look at his food

Verse 80:25

اَنَّا صَبَبۡنَا الۡمَآءَ صَبًّاۙ‏

How We poured down water in torrents

Verse 80:26

ثُمَّ شَقَقۡنَا الۡاَرۡضَ شَقًّاۙ‏

Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts]

Verse 80:27

فَاَنۭۡ بَتۡنَا فِيۡهَا حَبًّاۙ‏

And caused to grow within it grain

Verse 80:28

وَّعِنَبًا وَّقَضۡبًاۙ‏

And grapes and herbage

Verse 80:29

وَّزَيۡتُوۡنًا وَّنَخۡلًاۙ‏

And olive and palm trees

Verse 80:30

وَّحَدَآئِقَ غُلۡبًاۙ‏

And gardens of dense shrubbery

Verse 80:31

وَّفَاكِهَةً وَّاَبًّاۙ‏

And fruit and grass

Verse 80:32

مَّتَاعًا لَّكُمۡ وَلِاَنۡعَامِكُمۡؕ‏

[As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock

Verse 80:33

فَاِذَا جَآءَتِ الصَّآخَّةُؗ‏

But when there comes the Deafening Blast

Verse 80:34

يَوۡمَ يَفِرُّ الۡمَرۡءُ مِنۡ اَخِيۡهِۙ‏

On the Day a man will flee from his brother

Verse 80:35

وَاُمِّهٖ وَاَبِيۡهِۙ‏

And his mother and his father

Verse 80:36

وَصَاحِبَتِهٖ وَبَنِيۡهِؕ‏

And his wife and his children

Verse 80:37

لِكُلِّ امۡرِئٍ مِّنۡهُمۡ يَوۡمَئِذٍ شَاۡنٌ يُّغۡنِيۡهِؕ‏

For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him

Verse 80:38

وُجُوۡهٌ يَّوۡمَئِذٍ مُّسۡفِرَةٌۙ‏

[Some] faces, that Day, will be bright

Verse 80:39

ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسۡتَبۡشِرَةٌۚ‏

Laughing, rejoicing at good news

Verse 80:40

وَوُجُوۡهٌ يَّوۡمَئِذٍ عَلَيۡهَا غَبَرَةٌۙ‏

And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust

Verse 80:41

تَرۡهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌؕ‏

Blackness will cover them

Verse 80:42

اُولٰٓئِكَ هُمُ الۡكَفَرَةُ الۡفَجَرَةُࣖ‏

Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones
