Surah An-Naba (Arabic: سورة An-Naba, "The Tidings") is the 78 chapter (surah) of the Qur'an, containing 40 verses (ayahs). It is classified as a Meccan Surah, meaning it is historically understood to have been revealed during the Meccan Period (610–622 CE) of the prophecy.

Introduction

Surah An-Naba ("The Tidings") is chapter 78 of 114 in the Qur'an. The full Arabic text, English translation and transliteration of all 40 verses are given below, with verse-by-verse Tafsir available on each ayah.

Text and Translation

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Bismi-llāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm
Verse 78:1
عَمَّ يَتَسَآءَلُوۡنَۚ‏
ʿamma yatasāalūna
About what are they asking one another
Verse 78:2
عَنِ النَّبَاِ الۡعَظِيۡمِۙ‏
ʿani l-naba-i l-ʿaẓīmi
About the great news
Verse 78:3
الَّذِيۡ هُمۡ فِيۡهِ مُخۡتَلِفُوۡنَؕ‏
alladhī hum fīhi mukh'talifūna
That over which they are in disagreement
Verse 78:4
كَلَّا سَيَعۡلَمُوۡنَۙ‏
kallā sayaʿlamūna
No! They are going to know
Verse 78:5
ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَيَعۡلَمُوۡنَ
thumma kallā sayaʿlamūna
Then, no! They are going to know
Verse 78:6
اَلَمۡ نَجۡعَلِ الۡاَرۡضَ مِهٰدًاۙ‏
alam najʿali l-arḍa mihādan
Have We not made the earth a resting place
Verse 78:7
وَّالۡجِبَالَ اَوۡتَادًاۙ‏
wal-jibāla awtādan
And the mountains as stakes
Verse 78:8
وَّخَلَقۡنٰكُمۡ اَزۡوَاجًاۙ‏
wakhalaqnākum azwājan
And We created you in pairs
Verse 78:9
وَّجَعَلۡنَا نَوۡمَكُمۡ سُبَاتًاۙ‏
wajaʿalnā nawmakum subātan
And made your sleep [a means for] rest
Verse 78:10
وَّجَعَلۡنَا الَّيۡلَ لِبَاسًاۙ‏
wajaʿalnā al-layla libāsan
And made the night as clothing
Verse 78:11
وَّجَعَلۡنَا النَّهَارَ مَعَاشًاۚ‏
And made the day for livelihood
Verse 78:12
وَبَنَيۡنَا فَوۡقَكُمۡ سَبۡعًا شِدَادًاۙ‏
And constructed above you seven strong [heavens]
Verse 78:13
وَّجَعَلۡنَا سِرَاجًا وَّهَّاجًاۙ‏
And made [therein] a burning lamp
Verse 78:14
وَّاَنۡزَلۡنَا مِنَ الۡمُعۡصِرٰتِ مَآءً ثَجَّاجًاۙ‏
And sent down, from the rain clouds, pouring water
Verse 78:15
لِّنُخۡرِجَ بِهٖ حَبًّا وَّنَبَاتًاۙ‏
That We may bring forth thereby grain and vegetation
Verse 78:16
وَّجَنّٰتٍ اَلۡفَافًاؕ‏
And gardens of entwined growth
Verse 78:17
اِنَّ يَوۡمَ الۡفَصۡلِ كَانَ مِيۡقَاتًاۙ‏
Indeed, the Day of Judgement is an appointed time
Verse 78:18
يَّوۡمَ يُنۡفَخُ فِي الصُّوۡرِ فَتَاۡتُوۡنَ اَفۡوَاجًاۙ‏
The Day the Horn is blown and you will come forth in multitudes
Verse 78:19
وَّفُتِحَتِ السَّمَآءُ فَكَانَتۡ اَبۡوَابًاۙ‏
And the heaven is opened and will become gateways
Verse 78:20
وَّسُيِّرَتِ الۡجِبَالُ فَكَانَتۡ سَرَابًاؕ‏
And the mountains are removed and will be [but] a mirage
Verse 78:21
اِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتۡ مِرۡصَادًاۙ‏
Indeed, Hell has been lying in wait
Verse 78:22
لِّلطّٰغِيۡنَ مَاٰبًاۙ‏
For the transgressors, a place of return
Verse 78:23
لّٰبِثِيۡنَ فِيۡهَا٘ اَحۡقَابًاۚ‏
In which they will remain for ages [unending]
Verse 78:24
لَا يَذُوۡقُوۡنَ فِيۡهَا بَرۡدًا وَّلَا شَرَابًاۙ‏
They will not taste therein [any] coolness or drink
Verse 78:25
اِلَّا حَمِيۡمًا وَّغَسَّاقًاۙ‏
Except scalding water and [foul] purulence
Verse 78:26
جَزَآءً وِّفَاقًاؕ‏
An appropriate recompense
Verse 78:27
اِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوۡا لَا يَرۡجُوۡنَ حِسَابًاۙ‏
Indeed, they were not expecting an account
Verse 78:28
وَّكَذَّبُوۡا بِاٰيٰتِنَا كِذَّابًاؕ‏
And denied Our verses with [emphatic] denial
Verse 78:29
وَكُلَّ شَيۡءٍ اَحۡصَيۡنٰهُ كِتٰبًاۙ‏
But all things We have enumerated in writing
Verse 78:30
فَذُوۡقُوۡا فَلَنۡ نَّزِيۡدَكُمۡ اِلَّا عَذَابًاࣖ‏
So taste [the penalty], and never will We increase you except in torment
Verse 78:31
اِنَّ لِلۡمُتَّقِيۡنَ مَفَازًاۙ‏
Indeed, for the righteous is attainment
Verse 78:32
حَدَآئِقَ وَاَعۡنَابًاۙ‏
Gardens and grapevines
Verse 78:33
وَّكَوَاعِبَ اَتۡرَابًاۙ‏
And full-breasted [companions] of equal age
Verse 78:34
وَّكَاۡسًا دِهَاقًاؕ‏
And a full cup
Verse 78:35
لَا يَسۡمَعُوۡنَ فِيۡهَا لَغۡوًا وَّلَا كِذّٰبًاۚۖ‏
No ill speech will they hear therein or any falsehood
Verse 78:36
جَزَآءً مِّنۡ رَّبِّكَ عَطَآءً حِسَابًاۙ‏
[As] reward from your Lord, [a generous] gift [made due by] account
Verse 78:37
رَّبِّ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضِ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَا الرَّحۡمٰنِ لَا يَمۡلِكُوۡنَ مِنۡهُ خِطَابًاۚ‏
[From] the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the Most Merciful. They possess not from Him [authority for] speech
Verse 78:38
يَوۡمَ يَقُوۡمُ الرُّوۡحُ وَالۡمَلٰٓئِكَةُ صَفًّاؕࣗۙ لَّا يَتَكَلَّمُوۡنَ اِلَّا مَنۡ اَذِنَ لَهُ الرَّحۡمٰنُ وَقَالَ صَوَابًا
The Day that the Spirit and the angels will stand in rows, they will not speak except for one whom the Most Merciful permits, and he will say what is correct
Verse 78:39
ذٰلِكَ الۡيَوۡمُ الۡحَقُّۚ فَمَنۡ شَآءَ اتَّخَذَ اِلٰي رَبِّهٖ مَاٰبًا
That is the True Day; so he who wills may take to his Lord a [way of] return
Verse 78:40
اِنَّا٘ اَنۡذَرۡنٰكُمۡ عَذَابًا قَرِيۡبًا ࣢ۚۖ يَّوۡمَ يَنۡظُرُ الۡمَرۡءُ مَا قَدَّمَتۡ يَدٰهُ وَيَقُوۡلُ الۡكَافِرُ يٰلَيۡتَنِيۡ كُنۡتُ تُرٰبًاࣖ‏
Indeed, We have warned you of a near punishment on the Day when a man will observe what his hands have put forth and the disbeliever will say, "Oh, I wish that I were dust
