Surah Al-Mursalat (Arabic: سورة Al-Mursalat, "Those Sent Forth") is the 77 chapter (surah) of the Qur'an, containing 50 verses (ayahs). It is classified as a Meccan Surah, meaning it is historically understood to have been revealed during the Meccan Period (610–622 CE) of the prophecy.

Introduction

Surah Al-Mursalat ("Those Sent Forth") is chapter 77 of 114 in the Qur'an. The full Arabic text, English translation and transliteration of all 50 verses are given below, with verse-by-verse Tafsir available on each ayah.

Text and Translation

Verse 77:1

وَالۡمُرۡسَلٰتِ عُرۡفًاۙ‏

wal-mur'salāti ʿur'fan

By those [winds] sent forth in gusts

Verse 77:2

فَالۡعٰصِفٰتِ عَصۡفًاۙ‏

fal-ʿāṣifāti ʿaṣfan

And the winds that blow violently

Verse 77:3

وَّالنّٰشِرٰتِ نَشۡرًاۙ‏

wal-nāshirāti nashran

And [by] the winds that spread [clouds]

Verse 77:4

فَالۡفٰرِقٰتِ فَرۡقًاۙ‏

fal-fāriqāti farqan

And those [angels] who bring criterion

Verse 77:5

فَالۡمُلۡقِيٰتِ ذِكۡرًاۙ‏

fal-mul'qiyāti dhik'ran

And those [angels] who deliver a message

Verse 77:6

عُذۡرًا اَوۡ نُذۡرًاۙ‏

ʿudh'ran aw nudh'ran

As justification or warning

Verse 77:7

اِنَّمَا تُوۡعَدُوۡنَ لَوَاقِعٌؕ‏

innamā tūʿadūna lawāqiʿun

Indeed, what you are promised is to occur

Verse 77:8

فَاِذَا النُّجُوۡمُ طُمِسَتۡۙ‏

fa-idhā l-nujūmu ṭumisat

So when the stars are obliterated

Verse 77:9

وَاِذَا السَّمَآءُ فُرِجَتۡۙ‏

wa-idhā l-samāu furijat

And when the heaven is opened

Verse 77:10

وَاِذَا الۡجِبَالُ نُسِفَتۡۙ‏

wa-idhā l-jibālu nusifat

And when the mountains are blown away

Verse 77:11

وَاِذَا الرُّسُلُ اُقِّتَتۡؕ‏

And when the messengers' time has come

Verse 77:12

لِاَيِّ يَوۡمٍ اُجِّلَتۡؕ‏

For what Day was it postponed

Verse 77:13

لِيَوۡمِ الۡفَصۡلِۚ‏

For the Day of Judgement

Verse 77:14

وَمَا٘ اَدۡرٰىكَ مَا يَوۡمُ الۡفَصۡلِؕ‏

And what can make you know what is the Day of Judgement

Verse 77:15

وَيۡلٌ يَّوۡمَئِذٍ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِيۡنَ

Woe, that Day, to the deniers

Verse 77:16

اَلَمۡ نُهۡلِكِ الۡاَوَّلِيۡنَؕ‏

Did We not destroy the former peoples

Verse 77:17

ثُمَّ نُتۡبِعُهُمُ الۡاٰخِرِيۡنَ

Then We will follow them with the later ones

Verse 77:18

كَذٰلِكَ نَفۡعَلُ بِالۡمُجۡرِمِيۡنَ

Thus do We deal with the criminals

Verse 77:19

وَيۡلٌ يَّوۡمَئِذٍ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِيۡنَ

Woe, that Day, to the deniers

Verse 77:20

اَلَمۡ نَخۡلُقۡكُّمۡ مِّنۡ مَّآءٍ مَّهِيۡنٍۙ‏

Did We not create you from a liquid disdained

Verse 77:21

فَجَعَلۡنٰهُ فِيۡ قَرَارٍ مَّكِيۡنٍۙ‏

And We placed it in a firm lodging

Verse 77:22

اِلٰي قَدَرٍ مَّعۡلُوۡمٍۙ‏

For a known extent

Verse 77:23

فَقَدَرۡنَاࣗۖ فَنِعۡمَ الۡقٰدِرُوۡنَ

And We determined [it], and excellent [are We] to determine

Verse 77:24

وَيۡلٌ يَّوۡمَئِذٍ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِيۡنَ

Woe, that Day, to the deniers

Verse 77:25

اَلَمۡ نَجۡعَلِ الۡاَرۡضَ كِفَاتًاۙ‏

Have We not made the earth a container

Verse 77:26

اَحۡيَآءً وَّاَمۡوَاتًاۙ‏

Of the living and the dead

Verse 77:27

وَّجَعَلۡنَا فِيۡهَا رَوَاسِيَ شٰمِخٰتٍ وَّاَسۡقَيۡنٰكُمۡ مَّآءً فُرَاتًاؕ‏

And We placed therein lofty, firmly set mountains and have given you to drink sweet water

Verse 77:28

وَيۡلٌ يَّوۡمَئِذٍ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِيۡنَ

Woe, that Day, to the deniers

Verse 77:29

اِنۡطَلِقُوۡ٘ا اِلٰي مَا كُنۡتُمۡ بِهٖ تُكَذِّبُوۡنَۚ‏

[They will be told], "Proceed to that which you used to deny

Verse 77:30

اِنۡطَلِقُوۡ٘ا اِلٰي ظِلٍّ ذِيۡ ثَلٰثِ شُعَبٍۙ‏

Proceed to a shadow [of smoke] having three columns

Verse 77:31

لَّا ظَلِيۡلٍ وَّلَا يُغۡنِيۡ مِنَ اللَّهَبِؕ‏

[But having] no cool shade and availing not against the flame

Verse 77:32

اِنَّهَا تَرۡمِيۡ بِشَرَرٍ كَالۡقَصۡرِۚ‏

Indeed, it throws sparks [as huge] as a fortress

Verse 77:33

كَاَنَّهٗ جِمٰلَتٌ صُفۡرٌؕ‏

As if they were yellowish [black] camels

Verse 77:34

وَيۡلٌ يَّوۡمَئِذٍ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِيۡنَ

Woe, that Day, to the deniers

Verse 77:35

هٰذَا يَوۡمُ لَا يَنۡطِقُوۡنَۙ‏

This is a Day they will not speak

Verse 77:36

وَلَا يُؤۡذَنُ لَهُمۡ فَيَعۡتَذِرُوۡنَ

Nor will it be permitted for them to make an excuse

Verse 77:37

وَيۡلٌ يَّوۡمَئِذٍ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِيۡنَ

Woe, that Day, to the deniers

Verse 77:38

هٰذَا يَوۡمُ الۡفَصۡلِۚ جَمَعۡنٰكُمۡ وَالۡاَوَّلِيۡنَ

This is the Day of Judgement; We will have assembled you and the former peoples

Verse 77:39

فَاِنۡ كَانَ لَكُمۡ كَيۡدٌ فَكِيۡدُوۡنِ

So if you have a plan, then plan against Me

Verse 77:40

وَيۡلٌ يَّوۡمَئِذٍ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِيۡنَࣖ‏

Woe, that Day, to the deniers

Verse 77:41

اِنَّ الۡمُتَّقِيۡنَ فِيۡ ظِلٰلٍ وَّعُيُوۡنٍۙ‏

Indeed, the righteous will be among shades and springs

Verse 77:42

وَّفَوَاكِهَ مِمَّا يَشۡتَهُوۡنَؕ‏

And fruits from whatever they desire

Verse 77:43

كُلُوۡا وَاشۡرَبُوۡا هَنِيۡٓـًٔاۭ بِمَا كُنۡتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُوۡنَ

[Being told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you used to do

Verse 77:44

اِنَّا كَذٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي الۡمُحۡسِنِيۡنَ

Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good

Verse 77:45

وَيۡلٌ يَّوۡمَئِذٍ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِيۡنَ

Woe, that Day, to the deniers

Verse 77:46

كُلُوۡا وَتَمَتَّعُوۡا قَلِيۡلًا اِنَّكُمۡ مُّجۡرِمُوۡنَ

[O disbelievers], eat and enjoy yourselves a little; indeed, you are criminals

Verse 77:47

وَيۡلٌ يَّوۡمَئِذٍ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِيۡنَ

Woe, that Day, to the deniers

Verse 77:48

وَاِذَا قِيۡلَ لَهُمُ ارۡكَعُوۡا لَا يَرۡكَعُوۡنَ

And when it is said to them, "Bow [in prayer]," they do not bow

Verse 77:49

وَيۡلٌ يَّوۡمَئِذٍ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِيۡنَ

Woe, that Day, to the deniers

Verse 77:50

فَبِاَيِّ حَدِيۡثٍۭ بَعۡدَهٗ يُؤۡمِنُوۡنَࣖ‏

Then in what statement after the Qur'an will they believe
