Surah Al-Muddaththir (Arabic: سورة Al-Muddaththir, "The Cloaked One") is the 74 chapter (surah) of the Qur'an, containing 56 verses (ayahs). It is classified as a Meccan Surah, meaning it is historically understood to have been revealed during the Meccan Period (610–622 CE) of the prophecy.
Introduction
Surah Al-Muddaththir ("The Cloaked One") is chapter 74 of 114 in the Qur'an. The full Arabic text, English translation and transliteration of all 56 verses are given below, with verse-by-verse Tafsir available on each ayah.
Text and Translation
Verse 74:1
يٰ٘اَيُّهَا الۡمُدَّثِّرُۙ
yāayyuhā l-mudathiru
O you who covers himself [with a garment]
Verse 74:2
قُمۡ فَاَنۡذِرۡۙ
qum fa-andhir
Arise and warn
Verse 74:3
وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرۡۙ
warabbaka fakabbir
And your Lord glorify
Verse 74:4
وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرۡۙ
wathiyābaka faṭahhir
And your clothing purify
Verse 74:5
وَالرُّجۡزَ فَاهۡجُرۡۙ
wal-ruj'za fa-uh'jur
And uncleanliness avoid
Verse 74:6
وَلَا تَمۡنُنۡ تَسۡتَكۡثِرُۙ
walā tamnun tastakthiru
And do not confer favor to acquire more
Verse 74:7
وَلِرَبِّكَ فَاصۡبِرۡؕ
walirabbika fa-iṣ'bir
But for your Lord be patient
Verse 74:8
فَاِذَا نُقِرَ فِي النَّاقُوۡرِۙ
fa-idhā nuqira fī l-nāqūri
And when the trumpet is blown
Verse 74:9
فَذٰلِكَ يَوۡمَئِذٍ يَّوۡمٌ عَسِيۡرٌۙ
fadhālika yawma-idhin yawmun ʿasīrun
That Day will be a difficult day
Verse 74:10
عَلَي الۡكٰفِرِيۡنَ غَيۡرُ يَسِيۡرٍ
ʿalā l-kāfirīna ghayru yasīrin
For the disbelievers - not easy
Verse 74:11
ذَرۡنِيۡ وَمَنۡ خَلَقۡتُ وَحِيۡدًاۙ
Leave Me with the one I created alone
Verse 74:12
وَّجَعَلۡتُ لَهٗ مَالًا مَّمۡدُوۡدًاۙ
And to whom I granted extensive wealth
Verse 74:13
وَّبَنِيۡنَ شُهُوۡدًاۙ
And children present [with him]
Verse 74:14
وَّمَهَّدۡتُّ لَهٗ تَمۡهِيۡدًاۙ
And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]
Verse 74:15
ثُمَّ يَطۡمَعُ اَنۡ اَزِيۡدَۙ
Then he desires that I should add more
Verse 74:16
كَلَّاؕ اِنَّهٗ كَانَ لِاٰيٰتِنَا عَنِيۡدًاؕ
No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate
Verse 74:17
سَاُرۡهِقُهٗ صَعُوۡدًاؕ
I will cover him with arduous torment
Verse 74:18
اِنَّهٗ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَۙ
Indeed, he thought and deliberated
Verse 74:19
فَقُتِلَ كَيۡفَ قَدَّرَۙ
So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated
Verse 74:20
ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيۡفَ قَدَّرَۙ
Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated
Verse 74:21
ثُمَّ نَظَرَۙ
Then he considered [again]
Verse 74:22
ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَۙ
Then he frowned and scowled
Verse 74:23
ثُمَّ اَدۡبَرَ وَاسۡتَكۡبَرَۙ
Then he turned back and was arrogant
Verse 74:24
فَقَالَ اِنۡ هٰذَا٘ اِلَّا سِحۡرٌ يُّؤۡثَرُۙ
And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others]
Verse 74:25
اِنۡ هٰذَا٘ اِلَّا قَوۡلُ الۡبَشَرِؕ
This is not but the word of a human being
Verse 74:26
سَاُصۡلِيۡهِ سَقَرَ
I will drive him into Saqar
Verse 74:27
وَمَا٘ اَدۡرٰىكَ مَا سَقَرُؕ
And what can make you know what is Saqar
Verse 74:28
لَا تُبۡقِيۡ وَلَا تَذَرُۚ
It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned]
Verse 74:29
لَوَّاحَةٌ لِّلۡبَشَرِۚ
Blackening the skins
Verse 74:30
عَلَيۡهَا تِسۡعَةَ عَشَرَؕ
Over it are nineteen [angels]
Verse 74:31
وَمَا جَعَلۡنَا٘ اَصۡحٰبَ النَّارِ اِلَّا مَلٰٓئِكَةًࣕ وَّمَا جَعَلۡنَا عِدَّتَهُمۡ اِلَّا فِتۡنَةً لِّلَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡاۙ لِيَسۡتَيۡقِنَ الَّذِيۡنَ اُوۡتُوا الۡكِتٰبَ وَيَزۡدَادَ الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡ٘ا اِيۡمَانًا وَّلَا يَرۡتَابَ الَّذِيۡنَ اُوۡتُوا الۡكِتٰبَ وَالۡمُؤۡمِنُوۡنَۙ وَلِيَقُوۡلَ الَّذِيۡنَ فِيۡ قُلُوۡبِهِمۡ مَّرَضٌ وَّالۡكٰفِرُوۡنَ مَاذَا٘ اَرَادَ اللّٰهُ بِهٰذَا مَثَلًاؕ كَذٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ اللّٰهُ مَنۡ يَّشَآءُ وَيَهۡدِيۡ مَنۡ يَّشَآءُؕ وَمَا يَعۡلَمُ جُنُوۡدَ رَبِّكَ اِلَّا هُوَؕ وَمَا هِيَ اِلَّا ذِكۡرٰي لِلۡبَشَرِࣖ
And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve - that those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is hypocrisy and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allah intend by this as an example?" Thus does Allah leave astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And mention of the Fire is not but a reminder to humanity
Verse 74:32
كَلَّا وَالۡقَمَرِۙ
No! By the moon
Verse 74:33
وَالَّيۡلِ اِذۡ اَدۡبَرَۙ
And [by] the night when it departs
Verse 74:34
وَالصُّبۡحِ اِذَا٘ اَسۡفَرَۙ
And [by] the morning when it brightens
Verse 74:35
اِنَّهَا لَاِحۡدَي الۡكُبَرِۙ
Indeed, the Fire is of the greatest [afflictions]
Verse 74:36
نَذِيۡرًا لِّلۡبَشَرِۙ
As a warning to humanity
Verse 74:37
لِمَنۡ شَآءَ مِنۡكُمۡ اَنۡ يَّتَقَدَّمَ اَوۡ يَتَاَخَّرَؕ
To whoever wills among you to proceed or stay behind
Verse 74:38
كُلُّ نَفۡسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡ رَهِيۡنَةٌۙ
Every soul, for what it has earned, will be retained
Verse 74:39
اِلَّا٘ اَصۡحٰبَ الۡيَمِيۡنِؕۛ
Except the companions of the right
Verse 74:40
فِيۡ جَنّٰتٍࣞۛ يَتَسَآءَلُوۡنَۙ
[Who will be] in gardens, questioning each other
Verse 74:41
عَنِ الۡمُجۡرِمِيۡنَۙ
About the criminals
Verse 74:42
مَا سَلَكَكُمۡ فِيۡ سَقَرَ
[And asking them], "What put you into Saqar
Verse 74:43
قَالُوۡا لَمۡ نَكُ مِنَ الۡمُصَلِّيۡنَۙ
They will say, "We were not of those who prayed
Verse 74:44
وَلَمۡ نَكُ نُطۡعِمُ الۡمِسۡكِيۡنَۙ
Nor did we used to feed the poor
Verse 74:45
وَكُنَّا نَخُوۡضُ مَعَ الۡخَآئِضِيۡنَۙ
And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who engaged [in it]
Verse 74:46
وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوۡمِ الدِّيۡنِۙ
And we used to deny the Day of Recompense
Verse 74:47
حَتّٰ٘ي اَتٰىنَا الۡيَقِيۡنُؕ
Until there came to us the certainty
Verse 74:48
فَمَا تَنۡفَعُهُمۡ شَفَاعَةُ الشّٰفِعِيۡنَؕ
So there will not benefit them the intercession of [any] intercessors
Verse 74:49
فَمَا لَهُمۡ عَنِ التَّذۡكِرَةِ مُعۡرِضِيۡنَۙ
Then what is [the matter] with them that they are, from the reminder, turning away
Verse 74:50
كَاَنَّهُمۡ حُمُرٌ مُّسۡتَنۡفِرَةٌۙ
As if they were alarmed donkeys
Verse 74:51
فَرَّتۡ مِنۡ قَسۡوَرَةٍؕ
Fleeing from a lion
Verse 74:52
بَلۡ يُرِيۡدُ كُلُّ امۡرِئٍ مِّنۡهُمۡ اَنۡ يُّؤۡتٰي صُحُفًا مُّنَشَّرَةًۙ
Rather, every person among them desires that he would be given scriptures spread about
Verse 74:53
كَلَّاؕ بَلۡ لَّا يَخَافُوۡنَ الۡاٰخِرَةَؕ
No! But they do not fear the Hereafter
Verse 74:54
كَلَّا٘ اِنَّهٗ تَذۡكِرَةٌۚ
No! Indeed, the Qur'an is a reminder
Verse 74:55
فَمَنۡ شَآءَ ذَكَرَهٗؕ
Then whoever wills will remember it
Verse 74:56
وَمَا يَذۡكُرُوۡنَ اِلَّا٘ اَنۡ يَّشَآءَ اللّٰهُؕ هُوَ اَهۡلُ التَّقۡوٰي وَاَهۡلُ الۡمَغۡفِرَةِࣖ
And they will not remember except that Allah wills. He is worthy of fear and adequate for [granting] forgiveness
