Surah Al-Jinn (Arabic: سورة Al-Jinn, "The Jinn") is the 72 chapter (surah) of the Qur'an, containing 28 verses (ayahs). It is classified as a Meccan Surah, meaning it is historically understood to have been revealed during the Meccan Period (610–622 CE) of the prophecy.
Introduction
Surah Al-Jinn ("The Jinn") is chapter 72 of 114 in the Qur'an. The full Arabic text, English translation and transliteration of all 28 verses are given below, with verse-by-verse Tafsir available on each ayah.
Text and Translation
Verse 72:1
قُلۡ اُوۡحِيَ اِلَيَّ اَنَّهُ اسۡتَمَعَ نَفَرٌ مِّنَ الۡجِنِّ فَقَالُوۡ٘ا اِنَّا سَمِعۡنَا قُرۡاٰنًا عَجَبًاۙ
qul ūḥiya ilayya annahu is'tamaʿa nafarun mina l-jini faqālū innā samiʿ'nā qur'ānan ʿajaban
Say, [O Muhammad], "It has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn listened and said, 'Indeed, we have heard an amazing Qur'an
Verse 72:2
يَّهۡدِيۡ٘ اِلَي الرُّشۡدِ فَاٰمَنَّا بِهٖؕ وَلَنۡ نُّشۡرِكَ بِرَبِّنَا٘ اَحَدًاۙ
yahdī ilā l-rush'di faāmannā bihi walan nush'rika birabbinā aḥadan
It guides to the right course, and we have believed in it. And we will never associate with our Lord anyone
Verse 72:3
وَّاَنَّهٗ تَعٰلٰي جَدُّ رَبِّنَا مَا اتَّخَذَ صَاحِبَةً وَّلَا وَلَدًاۙ
wa-annahu taʿālā jaddu rabbinā mā ittakhadha ṣāḥibatan walā waladan
And [it teaches] that exalted is the nobleness of our Lord; He has not taken a wife or a son
Verse 72:4
وَّاَنَّهٗ كَانَ يَقُوۡلُ سَفِيۡهُنَا عَلَي اللّٰهِ شَطَطًاۙ
wa-annahu kāna yaqūlu safīhunā ʿalā l-lahi shaṭaṭan
And that our foolish one has been saying about Allah an excessive transgression
Verse 72:5
وَّاَنَّا ظَنَنَّا٘ اَنۡ لَّنۡ تَقُوۡلَ الۡاِنۡسُ وَالۡجِنُّ عَلَي اللّٰهِ كَذِبًاۙ
wa-annā ẓanannā an lan taqūla l-insu wal-jinu ʿalā l-lahi kadhiban
And we had thought that mankind and the jinn would never speak about Allah a lie
Verse 72:6
وَّاَنَّهٗ كَانَ رِجَالٌ مِّنَ الۡاِنۡسِ يَعُوۡذُوۡنَ بِرِجَالٍ مِّنَ الۡجِنِّ فَزَادُوۡهُمۡ رَهَقًاۙ
wa-annahu kāna rijālun mina l-insi yaʿūdhūna birijālin mina l-jini fazādūhum rahaqan
And there were men from mankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, so they [only] increased them in burden
Verse 72:7
وَّاَنَّهُمۡ ظَنُّوۡا كَمَا ظَنَنۡتُمۡ اَنۡ لَّنۡ يَّبۡعَثَ اللّٰهُ اَحَدًاۙ
wa-annahum ẓannū kamā ẓanantum an lan yabʿatha l-lahu aḥadan
And they had thought, as you thought, that Allah would never send anyone [as a messenger]
Verse 72:8
وَّاَنَّا لَمَسۡنَا السَّمَآءَ فَوَجَدۡنٰهَا مُلِئَتۡ حَرَسًا شَدِيۡدًا وَّشُهُبًاۙ
wa-annā lamasnā l-samāa fawajadnāhā muli-at ḥarasan shadīdan washuhuban
And we have sought [to reach] the heaven but found it filled with powerful guards and burning flames
Verse 72:9
وَّاَنَّا كُنَّا نَقۡعُدُ مِنۡهَا مَقَاعِدَ لِلسَّمۡعِؕ فَمَنۡ يَّسۡتَمِعِ الۡاٰنَ يَجِدۡ لَهٗ شِهَابًا رَّصَدًاۙ
wa-annā kunnā naqʿudu min'hā maqāʿida lilssamʿi faman yastamiʿi l-āna yajid lahu shihāban raṣadan
And we used to sit therein in positions for hearing, but whoever listens now will find a burning flame lying in wait for him
Verse 72:10
وَّاَنَّا لَا نَدۡرِيۡ٘ اَشَرٌّ اُرِيۡدَ بِمَنۡ فِي الۡاَرۡضِ اَمۡ اَرَادَ بِهِمۡ رَبُّهُمۡ رَشَدًاۙ
wa-annā lā nadrī asharrun urīda biman fī l-arḍi am arāda bihim rabbuhum rashadan
And we do not know [therefore] whether evil is intended for those on earth or whether their Lord intends for them a right course
Verse 72:11
وَّاَنَّا مِنَّا الصّٰلِحُوۡنَ وَمِنَّا دُوۡنَ ذٰلِكَؕ كُنَّا طَرَآئِقَ قِدَدًاۙ
And among us are the righteous, and among us are [others] not so; we were [of] divided ways
Verse 72:12
وَّاَنَّا ظَنَنَّا٘ اَنۡ لَّنۡ نُّعۡجِزَ اللّٰهَ فِي الۡاَرۡضِ وَلَنۡ نُّعۡجِزَهٗ هَرَبًاۙ
And we have become certain that we will never cause failure to Allah upon earth, nor can we escape Him by flight
Verse 72:13
وَّاَنَّا لَمَّا سَمِعۡنَا الۡهُدٰ٘ي اٰمَنَّا بِهٖؕ فَمَنۡ يُّؤۡمِنۭۡ بِرَبِّهٖ فَلَا يَخَافُ بَخۡسًا وَّلَا رَهَقًاۙ
And when we heard the guidance, we believed in it. And whoever believes in his Lord will not fear deprivation or burden
Verse 72:14
وَّاَنَّا مِنَّا الۡمُسۡلِمُوۡنَ وَمِنَّا الۡقٰسِطُوۡنَؕ فَمَنۡ اَسۡلَمَ فَاُولٰٓئِكَ تَحَرَّوۡا رَشَدًا
And among us are Muslims [in submission to Allah], and among us are the unjust. And whoever has become Muslim - those have sought out the right course
Verse 72:15
وَاَمَّا الۡقٰسِطُوۡنَ فَكَانُوۡا لِجَهَنَّمَ حَطَبًاۙ
But as for the unjust, they will be, for Hell, firewood
Verse 72:16
وَّاَنۡ لَّوِ اسۡتَقَامُوۡا عَلَي الطَّرِيۡقَةِ لَاَسۡقَيۡنٰهُمۡ مَّآءً غَدَقًاۙ
And [Allah revealed] that if they had remained straight on the way, We would have given them abundant provision
Verse 72:17
لِّنَفۡتِنَهُمۡ فِيۡهِؕ وَمَنۡ يُّعۡرِضۡ عَنۡ ذِكۡرِ رَبِّهٖ يَسۡلُكۡهُ عَذَابًا صَعَدًاۙ
So We might test them therein. And whoever turns away from the remembrance of his Lord He will put into arduous punishment
Verse 72:18
وَّاَنَّ الۡمَسٰجِدَ لِلّٰهِ فَلَا تَدۡعُوۡا مَعَ اللّٰهِ اَحَدًاۙ
And [He revealed] that the masjids are for Allah, so do not invoke with Allah anyone
Verse 72:19
وَّاَنَّهٗ لَمَّا قَامَ عَبۡدُ اللّٰهِ يَدۡعُوۡهُ كَادُوۡا يَكُوۡنُوۡنَ عَلَيۡهِ لِبَدًاؕࣖ
And that when the Servant of Allah stood up supplicating Him, they almost became about him a compacted mass
Verse 72:20
قُلۡ اِنَّمَا٘ اَدۡعُوۡا رَبِّيۡ وَلَا٘ اُشۡرِكُ بِهٖ٘ اَحَدًا
Say, [O Muhammad], "I only invoke my Lord and do not associate with Him anyone
Verse 72:21
قُلۡ اِنِّيۡ لَا٘ اَمۡلِكُ لَكُمۡ ضَرًّا وَّلَا رَشَدًا
Say, "Indeed, I do not possess for you [the power of] harm or right direction
Verse 72:22
قُلۡ اِنِّيۡ لَنۡ يُّجِيۡرَنِيۡ مِنَ اللّٰهِ اَحَدٌ ۙ وَّلَنۡ اَجِدَ مِنۡ دُوۡنِهٖ مُلۡتَحَدًاۙ
Say, "Indeed, there will never protect me from Allah anyone [if I should disobey], nor will I find in other than Him a refuge
Verse 72:23
اِلَّا بَلٰغًا مِّنَ اللّٰهِ وَرِسٰلٰتِهٖؕ وَمَنۡ يَّعۡصِ اللّٰهَ وَرَسُوۡلَهٗ فَاِنَّ لَهٗ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خٰلِدِيۡنَ فِيۡهَا٘ اَبَدًاؕ
But [I have for you] only notification from Allah, and His messages." And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger - then indeed, for him is the fire of Hell; they will abide therein forever
Verse 72:24
حَتّٰ٘ي اِذَا رَاَوۡا مَا يُوۡعَدُوۡنَ فَسَيَعۡلَمُوۡنَ مَنۡ اَضۡعَفُ نَاصِرًا وَّاَقَلُّ عَدَدًا
[The disbelievers continue] until, when they see that which they are promised, then they will know who is weaker in helpers and less in number
Verse 72:25
قُلۡ اِنۡ اَدۡرِيۡ٘ اَقَرِيۡبٌ مَّا تُوۡعَدُوۡنَ اَمۡ يَجۡعَلُ لَهٗ رَبِّيۡ٘ اَمَدًا
Say, "I do not know if what you are promised is near or if my Lord will grant for it a [long] period
Verse 72:26
عٰلِمُ الۡغَيۡبِ فَلَا يُظۡهِرُ عَلٰي غَيۡبِهٖ٘ اَحَدًاۙ
[He is] Knower of the unseen, and He does not disclose His [knowledge of the] unseen to anyone
Verse 72:27
اِلَّا مَنِ ارۡتَضٰي مِنۡ رَّسُوۡلٍ فَاِنَّهٗ يَسۡلُكُ مِنۭۡ بَيۡنِ يَدَيۡهِ وَمِنۡ خَلۡفِهٖ رَصَدًاۙ
Except whom He has approved of messengers, and indeed, He sends before each messenger and behind him observers
Verse 72:28
لِّيَعۡلَمَ اَنۡ قَدۡ اَبۡلَغُوۡا رِسٰلٰتِ رَبِّهِمۡ وَاَحَاطَ بِمَا لَدَيۡهِمۡ وَاَحۡصٰي كُلَّ شَيۡءٍ عَدَدًاࣖ
That he may know that they have conveyed the messages of their Lord; and He has encompassed whatever is with them and has enumerated all things in number
