Surah Al-Ma'arij (Arabic: سورة Al-Ma'arij, "The Ascending Stairways") is the 70 chapter (surah) of the Qur'an, containing 44 verses (ayahs). It is classified as a Meccan Surah, meaning it is historically understood to have been revealed during the Meccan Period (610–622 CE) of the prophecy.

Introduction

Surah Al-Ma'arij ("The Ascending Stairways") is chapter 70 of 114 in the Qur'an. The full Arabic text, English translation and transliteration of all 44 verses are given below, with verse-by-verse Tafsir available on each ayah.

Text and Translation

Verse 70:1

سَاَلَ سَآئِلٌۭ بِعَذَابٍ وَّاقِعٍۙ‏

sa-ala sāilun biʿadhābin wāqiʿin

A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen

Verse 70:2

لِّلۡكٰفِرِيۡنَ لَيۡسَ لَهٗ دَافِعٌۙ‏

lil'kāfirīna laysa lahu dāfiʿun

To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer

Verse 70:3

مِّنَ اللّٰهِ ذِي الۡمَعَارِجِؕ‏

mina l-lahi dhī l-maʿāriji

[It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent

Verse 70:4

تَعۡرُجُ الۡمَلٰٓئِكَةُ وَالرُّوۡحُ اِلَيۡهِ فِيۡ يَوۡمٍ كَانَ مِقۡدَارُهٗ خَمۡسِيۡنَ اَلۡفَ سَنَةٍۚ‏

taʿruju l-malāikatu wal-rūḥu ilayhi fī yawmin kāna miq'dāruhu khamsīna alfa sanatin

The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years

Verse 70:5

فَاصۡبِرۡ صَبۡرًا جَمِيۡلًا

fa-iṣ'bir ṣabran jamīlan

So be patient with gracious patience

Verse 70:6

اِنَّهُمۡ يَرَوۡنَهٗ بَعِيۡدًاۙ‏

innahum yarawnahu baʿīdan

Indeed, they see it [as] distant

Verse 70:7

وَّنَرٰىهُ قَرِيۡبًاؕ‏

wanarāhu qarīban

But We see it [as] near

Verse 70:8

يَوۡمَ تَكُوۡنُ السَّمَآءُ كَالۡمُهۡلِۙ‏

yawma takūnu l-samāu kal-muh'li

On the Day the sky will be like murky oil

Verse 70:9

وَتَكُوۡنُ الۡجِبَالُ كَالۡعِهۡنِۙ‏

watakūnu l-jibālu kal-ʿih'ni

And the mountains will be like wool

Verse 70:10

وَلَا يَسۡـَٔلُ حَمِيۡمٌ حَمِيۡمًاۚۙ‏

walā yasalu ḥamīmun ḥamīman

And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend

Verse 70:11

يُّبَصَّرُوۡنَهُمۡؕ يَوَدُّ الۡمُجۡرِمُ لَوۡ يَفۡتَدِيۡ مِنۡ عَذَابِ يَوۡمِئِذٍۭ بِبَنِيۡهِۙ‏

They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children

Verse 70:12

وَصَاحِبَتِهٖ وَاَخِيۡهِۙ‏

And his wife and his brother

Verse 70:13

وَفَصِيۡلَتِهِ الَّتِيۡ تُـٔۡوِيۡهِۙ‏

And his nearest kindred who shelter him

Verse 70:14

وَمَنۡ فِي الۡاَرۡضِ جَمِيۡعًاۙ ثُمَّ يُنۡجِيۡهِۙ‏

And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him

Verse 70:15

كَلَّاؕ اِنَّهَا لَظٰيۙ‏

No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell]

Verse 70:16

نَزَّاعَةً لِّلشَّوٰيۚۖ‏

A remover of exteriors

Verse 70:17

تَدۡعُوۡا مَنۡ اَدۡبَرَ وَتَوَلّٰيۙ‏

It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience]

Verse 70:18

وَجَمَعَ فَاَوۡعٰي

And collected [wealth] and hoarded

Verse 70:19

اِنَّ الۡاِنۡسَانَ خُلِقَ هَلُوۡعًاۙ‏

Indeed, mankind was created anxious

Verse 70:20

اِذَا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ جَزُوۡعًاۙ‏

When evil touches him, impatient

Verse 70:21

وَّاِذَا مَسَّهُ الۡخَيۡرُ مَنُوۡعًاۙ‏

And when good touches him, withholding [of it]

Verse 70:22

اِلَّا الۡمُصَلِّيۡنَۙ‏

Except the observers of prayer

Verse 70:23

الَّذِيۡنَ هُمۡ عَلٰي صَلَاتِهِمۡ دَآئِمُوۡنَۙࣕ‏

Those who are constant in their prayer

Verse 70:24

وَالَّذِيۡنَ فِيۡ٘ اَمۡوَالِهِمۡ حَقٌّ مَّعۡلُوۡمٌۙࣕ‏

And those within whose wealth is a known right

Verse 70:25

لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَالۡمَحۡرُوۡمِۙࣕ‏

For the petitioner and the deprived

Verse 70:26

وَالَّذِيۡنَ يُصَدِّقُوۡنَ بِيَوۡمِ الدِّيۡنِۙࣕ‏

And those who believe in the Day of Recompense

Verse 70:27

وَالَّذِيۡنَ هُمۡ مِّنۡ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِمۡ مُّشۡفِقُوۡنَۚ‏

And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord

Verse 70:28

اِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمۡ غَيۡرُ مَاۡمُوۡنٍࣕ‏

Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe

Verse 70:29

وَالَّذِيۡنَ هُمۡ لِفُرُوۡجِهِمۡ حٰفِظُوۡنَۙ‏

And those who guard their private parts

Verse 70:30

اِلَّا عَلٰ٘ي اَزۡوَاجِهِمۡ اَوۡ مَا مَلَكَتۡ اَيۡمَانُهُمۡ فَاِنَّهُمۡ غَيۡرُ مَلُوۡمِيۡنَۚ‏

Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed

Verse 70:31

فَمَنِ ابۡتَغٰي وَرَآءَ ذٰلِكَ فَاُولٰٓئِكَ هُمُ الۡعٰدُوۡنَۚ‏

But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors

Verse 70:32

وَالَّذِيۡنَ هُمۡ لِاَمٰنٰتِهِمۡ وَعَهۡدِهِمۡ رٰعُوۡنَࣕۙ‏

And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive

Verse 70:33

وَالَّذِيۡنَ هُمۡ بِشَهٰدٰتِهِمۡ قَآئِمُوۡنَۙࣕ‏

And those who are in their testimonies upright

Verse 70:34

وَالَّذِيۡنَ هُمۡ عَلٰي صَلَاتِهِمۡ يُحَافِظُوۡنَؕ‏

And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer

Verse 70:35

اُولٰٓئِكَ فِيۡ جَنّٰتٍ مُّكۡرَمُوۡنَࣖؕ‏

They will be in gardens, honored

Verse 70:36

فَمَالِ الَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡا قِبَلَكَ مُهۡطِعِيۡنَۙ‏

So what is [the matter] with those who disbelieve, hastening [from] before you, [O Muhammad]

Verse 70:37

عَنِ الۡيَمِيۡنِ وَعَنِ الشِّمَالِ عِزِيۡنَ

[To sit] on [your] right and [your] left in separate groups

Verse 70:38

اَيَطۡمَعُ كُلُّ امۡرِئٍ مِّنۡهُمۡ اَنۡ يُّدۡخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيۡمٍۙ‏

Does every person among them aspire to enter a garden of pleasure

Verse 70:39

كَلَّاؕ اِنَّا خَلَقۡنٰهُمۡ مِّمَّا يَعۡلَمُوۡنَ

No! Indeed, We have created them from that which they know

Verse 70:40

فَلَا٘ اُقۡسِمُ بِرَبِّ الۡمَشٰرِقِ وَالۡمَغٰرِبِ اِنَّا لَقٰدِرُوۡنَۙ‏

So I swear by the Lord of [all] risings and settings that indeed We are able

Verse 70:41

عَلٰ٘ي اَنۡ نُّبَدِّلَ خَيۡرًا مِّنۡهُمۡۙ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَسۡبُوۡقِيۡنَ

To replace them with better than them; and We are not to be outdone

Verse 70:42

فَذَرۡهُمۡ يَخُوۡضُوۡا وَيَلۡعَبُوۡا حَتّٰي يُلٰقُوۡا يَوۡمَهُمُ الَّذِيۡ يُوۡعَدُوۡنَۙ‏

So leave them to converse vainly and amuse themselves until they meet their Day which they are promised

Verse 70:43

يَوۡمَ يَخۡرُجُوۡنَ مِنَ الۡاَجۡدَاثِ سِرَاعًا كَاَنَّهُمۡ اِلٰي نُصُبٍ يُّوۡفِضُوۡنَۙ‏

The Day they will emerge from the graves rapidly as if they were, toward an erected idol, hastening

Verse 70:44

خَاشِعَةً اَبۡصَارُهُمۡ تَرۡهَقُهُمۡ ذِلَّةٌؕ ذٰلِكَ الۡيَوۡمُ الَّذِيۡ كَانُوۡا يُوۡعَدُوۡنَࣖ‏

Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. That is the Day which they had been promised
