Surah Al-Haqqah (Arabic: سورة Al-Haqqah, "The Reality") is the 69 chapter (surah) of the Qur'an, containing 52 verses (ayahs). It is classified as a Meccan Surah, meaning it is historically understood to have been revealed during the Meccan Period (610–622 CE) of the prophecy.

Introduction

Surah Al-Haqqah ("The Reality") is chapter 69 of 114 in the Qur'an. The full Arabic text, English translation and transliteration of all 52 verses are given below, with verse-by-verse Tafsir available on each ayah.

Text and Translation

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Bismi-llāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm
Verse 69:1
اَلۡحَآقَّةُۙ‏
al-ḥāqatu
The Inevitable Reality
Verse 69:2
مَا الۡحَآقَّةُۚ‏
mā l-ḥāqatu
What is the Inevitable Reality
Verse 69:3
وَمَا٘ اَدۡرٰىكَ مَا الۡحَآقَّةُؕ‏
wamā adrāka mā l-ḥāqatu
And what can make you know what is the Inevitable Reality
Verse 69:4
كَذَّبَتۡ ثَمُوۡدُ وَعَادٌۭ بِالۡقَارِعَةِ
kadhabat thamūdu waʿādun bil-qāriʿati
Thamud and 'Aad denied the Striking Calamity
Verse 69:5
فَاَمَّا ثَمُوۡدُ فَاُهۡلِكُوۡا بِالطَّاغِيَةِ
fa-ammā thamūdu fa-uh'likū bil-ṭāghiyati
So as for Thamud, they were destroyed by the overpowering [blast]
Verse 69:6
وَاَمَّا عَادٌ فَاُهۡلِكُوۡا بِرِيۡحٍ صَرۡصَرٍ عَاتِيَةٍۙ‏
wa-ammā ʿādun fa-uh'likū birīḥin ṣarṣarin ʿātiyatin
And as for 'Aad, they were destroyed by a screaming, violent wind
Verse 69:7
سَخَّرَهَا عَلَيۡهِمۡ سَبۡعَ لَيَالٍ وَّثَمٰنِيَةَ اَيَّامٍۙ حُسُوۡمًا فَتَرَي الۡقَوۡمَ فِيۡهَا صَرۡعٰيۙ كَاَنَّهُمۡ اَعۡجَازُ نَخۡلٍ خَاوِيَةٍۚ‏
sakharahā ʿalayhim sabʿa layālin wathamāniyata ayyāmin ḥusūman fatarā l-qawma fīhā ṣarʿā ka-annahum aʿjāzu nakhlin khāwiyatin
Which Allah imposed upon them for seven nights and eight days in succession, so you would see the people therein fallen as if they were hollow trunks of palm trees
Verse 69:8
فَهَلۡ تَرٰي لَهُمۡ مِّنۭۡ بَاقِيَةٍ
fahal tarā lahum min bāqiyatin
Then do you see of them any remains
Verse 69:9
وَجَآءَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ وَمَنۡ قَبۡلَهٗ وَالۡمُؤۡتَفِكٰتُ بِالۡخَاطِئَةِۚ‏
wajāa fir'ʿawnu waman qablahu wal-mu'tafikātu bil-khāṭi-ati
And there came Pharaoh and those before him and the overturned cities with sin
Verse 69:10
فَعَصَوۡا رَسُوۡلَ رَبِّهِمۡ فَاَخَذَهُمۡ اَخۡذَةً رَّابِيَةً
faʿaṣaw rasūla rabbihim fa-akhadhahum akhdhatan rābiyatan
And they disobeyed the messenger of their Lord, so He seized them with a seizure exceeding [in severity]
Verse 69:11
اِنَّا لَمَّا طَغَا الۡمَآءُ حَمَلۡنٰكُمۡ فِي الۡجَارِيَةِۙ‏
Indeed, when the water overflowed, We carried your ancestors in the sailing ship
Verse 69:12
لِنَجۡعَلَهَا لَكُمۡ تَذۡكِرَةً وَّتَعِيَهَا٘ اُذُنٌ وَّاعِيَةٌ
That We might make it for you a reminder and [that] a conscious ear would be conscious of it
Verse 69:13
فَاِذَا نُفِخَ فِي الصُّوۡرِ نَفۡخَةٌ وَّاحِدَةٌۙ‏
Then when the Horn is blown with one blast
Verse 69:14
وَّحُمِلَتِ الۡاَرۡضُ وَالۡجِبَالُ فَدُكَّتَا دَكَّةً وَّاحِدَةًۙ‏
And the earth and the mountains are lifted and leveled with one blow
Verse 69:15
فَيَوۡمَئِذٍ وَّقَعَتِ الۡوَاقِعَةُۙ‏
Then on that Day, the Resurrection will occur
Verse 69:16
وَانۡشَقَّتِ السَّمَآءُ فَهِيَ يَوۡمَئِذٍ وَّاهِيَةٌۙ‏
And the heaven will split [open], for that Day it is infirm
Verse 69:17
وَّالۡمَلَكُ عَلٰ٘ي اَرۡجَآئِهَاؕ وَيَحۡمِلُ عَرۡشَ رَبِّكَ فَوۡقَهُمۡ يَوۡمَئِذٍ ثَمٰنِيَةٌؕ‏
And the angels are at its edges. And there will bear the Throne of your Lord above them, that Day, eight [of them]
Verse 69:18
يَوۡمَئِذٍ تُعۡرَضُوۡنَ لَا تَخۡفٰي مِنۡكُمۡ خَافِيَةٌ
That Day, you will be exhibited [for judgement]; not hidden among you is anything concealed
Verse 69:19
فَاَمَّا مَنۡ اُوۡتِيَ كِتٰبَهٗ بِيَمِيۡنِهٖ فَيَقُوۡلُ هَآؤُمُ اقۡرَءُوۡا كِتٰبِيَهۡۚ‏
So as for he who is given his record in his right hand, he will say, "Here, read my record
Verse 69:20
اِنِّيۡ ظَنَنۡتُ اَنِّيۡ مُلٰقٍ حِسَابِيَهۡۚ‏
Indeed, I was certain that I would be meeting my account
Verse 69:21
فَهُوَ فِيۡ عِيۡشَةٍ رَّاضِيَةٍۙ‏
So he will be in a pleasant life
Verse 69:22
فِيۡ جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍۙ‏
In an elevated garden
Verse 69:23
قُطُوۡفُهَا دَانِيَةٌ
Its [fruit] to be picked hanging near
Verse 69:24
كُلُوۡا وَاشۡرَبُوۡا هَنِيۡٓـًٔاۭ بِمَا٘ اَسۡلَفۡتُمۡ فِي الۡاَيَّامِ الۡخَالِيَةِ
[They will be told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you put forth in the days past
Verse 69:25
وَاَمَّا مَنۡ اُوۡتِيَ كِتٰبَهٗ بِشِمَالِهٖ ࣢ۙ فَيَقُوۡلُ يٰلَيۡتَنِيۡ لَمۡ اُوۡتَ كِتٰبِيَهۡۚ‏
But as for he who is given his record in his left hand, he will say, "Oh, I wish I had not been given my record
Verse 69:26
وَلَمۡ اَدۡرِ مَا حِسَابِيَهۡۚ‏
And had not known what is my account
Verse 69:27
يٰلَيۡتَهَا كَانَتِ الۡقَاضِيَةَۚ‏
I wish my death had been the decisive one
Verse 69:28
مَا٘ اَغۡنٰي عَنِّيۡ مَالِيَهۡۚ‏
My wealth has not availed me
Verse 69:29
هَلَكَ عَنِّيۡ سُلۡطٰنِيَهۡۚ‏
Gone from me is my authority
Verse 69:30
خُذُوۡهُ فَغُلُّوۡهُۙ‏
[Allah will say], "Seize him and shackle him
Verse 69:31
ثُمَّ الۡجَحِيۡمَ صَلُّوۡهُۙ‏
Then into Hellfire drive him
Verse 69:32
ثُمَّ فِيۡ سِلۡسِلَةٍ ذَرۡعُهَا سَبۡعُوۡنَ ذِرَاعًا فَاسۡلُكُوۡهُؕ‏
Then into a chain whose length is seventy cubits insert him
Verse 69:33
اِنَّهٗ كَانَ لَا يُؤۡمِنُ بِاللّٰهِ الۡعَظِيۡمِۙ‏
Indeed, he did not used to believe in Allah, the Most Great
Verse 69:34
وَلَا يَحُضُّ عَلٰي طَعَامِ الۡمِسۡكِيۡنِؕ‏
Nor did he encourage the feeding of the poor
Verse 69:35
فَلَيۡسَ لَهُ الۡيَوۡمَ هٰهُنَا حَمِيۡمٌۙ‏
So there is not for him here this Day any devoted friend
Verse 69:36
وَّلَا طَعَامٌ اِلَّا مِنۡ غِسۡلِيۡنٍۙ‏
Nor any food except from the discharge of wounds
Verse 69:37
لَّا يَاۡكُلُهٗ٘ اِلَّا الۡخٰطِـُٔوۡنَࣖ‏
None will eat it except the sinners
Verse 69:38
فَلَا٘ اُقۡسِمُ بِمَا تُبۡصِرُوۡنَۙ‏
So I swear by what you see
Verse 69:39
وَمَا لَا تُبۡصِرُوۡنَۙ‏
And what you do not see
Verse 69:40
اِنَّهٗ لَقَوۡلُ رَسُوۡلٍ كَرِيۡمٍۚۙ‏
[That] indeed, the Qur'an is the word of a noble Messenger
Verse 69:41
وَّمَا هُوَ بِقَوۡلِ شَاعِرٍؕ قَلِيۡلًا مَّا تُؤۡمِنُوۡنَۙ‏
And it is not the word of a poet; little do you believe
Verse 69:42
وَلَا بِقَوۡلِ كَاهِنٍؕ قَلِيۡلًا مَّا تَذَكَّرُوۡنَؕ‏
Nor the word of a soothsayer; little do you remember
Verse 69:43
تَنۡزِيۡلٌ مِّنۡ رَّبِّ الۡعٰلَمِيۡنَ
[It is] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds
Verse 69:44
وَلَوۡ تَقَوَّلَ عَلَيۡنَا بَعۡضَ الۡاَقَاوِيۡلِۙ‏
And if Muhammad had made up about Us some [false] sayings
Verse 69:45
لَاَخَذۡنَا مِنۡهُ بِالۡيَمِيۡنِۙ‏
We would have seized him by the right hand
Verse 69:46
ثُمَّ لَقَطَعۡنَا مِنۡهُ الۡوَتِيۡنَؗۖ‏
Then We would have cut from him the aorta
Verse 69:47
فَمَا مِنۡكُمۡ مِّنۡ اَحَدٍ عَنۡهُ حٰجِزِيۡنَ
And there is no one of you who could prevent [Us] from him
Verse 69:48
وَاِنَّهٗ لَتَذۡكِرَةٌ لِّلۡمُتَّقِيۡنَ
And indeed, the Qur'an is a reminder for the righteous
Verse 69:49
وَاِنَّا لَنَعۡلَمُ اَنَّ مِنۡكُمۡ مُّكَذِّبِيۡنَ
And indeed, We know that among you are deniers
Verse 69:50
وَاِنَّهٗ لَحَسۡرَةٌ عَلَي الۡكٰفِرِيۡنَ
And indeed, it will be [a cause of] regret upon the disbelievers
Verse 69:51
وَاِنَّهٗ لَحَقُّ الۡيَقِيۡنِ
And indeed, it is the truth of certainty
Verse 69:52
فَسَبِّحۡ بِاسۡمِ رَبِّكَ الۡعَظِيۡمِࣖ‏
So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great
