Surah Al-Jumu'ah (Arabic: سورة Al-Jumu'ah, "The Congregation") is the 62 chapter (surah) of the Qur'an, containing 11 verses (ayahs). It is classified as a Medinan Surah, meaning it is historically understood to have been revealed during the Medinan Period (622–632 CE) of the prophecy.
Introduction
Surah Al-Jumu'ah ("The Congregation") is chapter 62 of 114 in the Qur'an. The full Arabic text, English translation and transliteration of all 11 verses are given below, with verse-by-verse Tafsir available on each ayah.
Text and Translation
Verse 62:1
يُسَبِّحُ لِلّٰهِ مَا فِي السَّمٰوٰتِ وَمَا فِي الۡاَرۡضِ الۡمَلِكِ الۡقُدُّوۡسِ الۡعَزِيۡزِ الۡحَكِيۡمِ
yusabbiḥu lillahi mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi l-maliki l-qudūsi l-ʿazīzi l-ḥakīmi
Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth is exalting Allah, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Exalted in Might, the Wise
Verse 62:2
هُوَ الَّذِيۡ بَعَثَ فِي الۡاُمِّيّٖنَ رَسُوۡلًا مِّنۡهُمۡ يَتۡلُوۡا عَلَيۡهِمۡ اٰيٰتِهٖ وَيُزَكِّيۡهِمۡ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ الۡكِتٰبَ وَالۡحِكۡمَةَࣗ وَاِنۡ كَانُوۡا مِنۡ قَبۡلُ لَفِيۡ ضَلٰلٍ مُّبِيۡنٍۙ
huwa alladhī baʿatha fī l-umiyīna rasūlan min'hum yatlū ʿalayhim āyātihi wayuzakkīhim wayuʿallimuhumu l-kitāba wal-ḥik'mata wa-in kānū min qablu lafī ḍalālin mubīnin
It is He who has sent among the unlettered a Messenger from themselves reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book and wisdom - although they were before in clear error
Verse 62:3
وَّاٰخَرِيۡنَ مِنۡهُمۡ لَمَّا يَلۡحَقُوۡا بِهِمۡؕ وَهُوَ الۡعَزِيۡزُ الۡحَكِيۡمُ
waākharīna min'hum lammā yalḥaqū bihim wahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīmu
And [to] others of them who have not yet joined them. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise
Verse 62:4
ذٰلِكَ فَضۡلُ اللّٰهِ يُؤۡتِيۡهِ مَنۡ يَّشَآءُؕ وَاللّٰهُ ذُو الۡفَضۡلِ الۡعَظِيۡمِ
dhālika faḍlu l-lahi yu'tīhi man yashāu wal-lahu dhū l-faḍli l-ʿaẓīmi
That is the bounty of Allah, which He gives to whom He wills, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty
Verse 62:5
مَثَلُ الَّذِيۡنَ حُمِّلُوا التَّوۡرٰىةَ ثُمَّ لَمۡ يَحۡمِلُوۡهَا كَمَثَلِ الۡحِمَارِ يَحۡمِلُ اَسۡفَارًاؕ بِئۡسَ مَثَلُ الۡقَوۡمِ الَّذِيۡنَ كَذَّبُوۡا بِاٰيٰتِ اللّٰهِؕ وَاللّٰهُ لَا يَهۡدِي الۡقَوۡمَ الظّٰلِمِيۡنَ
mathalu alladhīna ḥummilū l-tawrāta thumma lam yaḥmilūhā kamathali l-ḥimāri yaḥmilu asfāran bi'sa mathalu l-qawmi alladhīna kadhabū biāyāti l-lahi wal-lahu lā yahdī l-qawma l-ẓālimīna
The example of those who were entrusted with the Torah and then did not take it on is like that of a donkey who carries volumes [of books]. Wretched is the example of the people who deny the signs of Allah. And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people
Verse 62:6
قُلۡ يٰ٘اَيُّهَا الَّذِيۡنَ هَادُوۡ٘ا اِنۡ زَعَمۡتُمۡ اَنَّكُمۡ اَوۡلِيَآءُ لِلّٰهِ مِنۡ دُوۡنِ النَّاسِ فَتَمَنَّوُا الۡمَوۡتَ اِنۡ كُنۡتُمۡ صٰدِقِيۡنَ
qul yāayyuhā alladhīna hādū in zaʿamtum annakum awliyāu lillahi min dūni l-nāsi fatamannawū l-mawta in kuntum ṣādiqīna
Say, "O you who are Jews, if you claim that you are allies of Allah, excluding the [other] people, then wish for death, if you should be truthful
Verse 62:7
وَلَا يَتَمَنَّوۡنَهٗ٘ اَبَدًاۭ بِمَا قَدَّمَتۡ اَيۡدِيۡهِمۡؕ وَاللّٰهُ عَلِيۡمٌۭ بِالظّٰلِمِيۡنَ
walā yatamannawnahu abadan bimā qaddamat aydīhim wal-lahu ʿalīmun bil-ẓālimīna
But they will not wish for it, ever, because of what their hands have put forth. And Allah is Knowing of the wrongdoers
Verse 62:8
قُلۡ اِنَّ الۡمَوۡتَ الَّذِيۡ تَفِرُّوۡنَ مِنۡهُ فَاِنَّهٗ مُلٰقِيۡكُمۡ ثُمَّ تُرَدُّوۡنَ اِلٰي عٰلِمِ الۡغَيۡبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ فَيُنَبِّئُكُمۡ بِمَا كُنۡتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُوۡنَࣖ
qul inna l-mawta alladhī tafirrūna min'hu fa-innahu mulāqīkum thumma turaddūna ilā ʿālimi l-ghaybi wal-shahādati fayunabbi-ukum bimā kuntum taʿmalūna
Say, "Indeed, the death from which you flee - indeed, it will meet you. Then you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, and He will inform you about what you used to do
Verse 62:9
يٰ٘اَيُّهَا الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡ٘ا اِذَا نُوۡدِيَ لِلصَّلٰوةِ مِنۡ يَّوۡمِ الۡجُمُعَةِ فَاسۡعَوۡا اِلٰي ذِكۡرِ اللّٰهِ وَذَرُوا الۡبَيۡعَؕ ذٰلِكُمۡ خَيۡرٌ لَّكُمۡ اِنۡ كُنۡتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُوۡنَ
yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū idhā nūdiya lilṣṣalati min yawmi l-jumuʿati fa-is'ʿaw ilā dhik'ri l-lahi wadharū l-bayʿa dhālikum khayrun lakum in kuntum taʿlamūna
O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew
Verse 62:10
فَاِذَا قُضِيَتِ الصَّلٰوةُ فَانۡتَشِرُوۡا فِي الۡاَرۡضِ وَابۡتَغُوۡا مِنۡ فَضۡلِ اللّٰهِ وَاذۡكُرُوا اللّٰهَ كَثِيۡرًا لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تُفۡلِحُوۡنَ
fa-idhā quḍiyati l-ṣalatu fa-intashirū fī l-arḍi wa-ib'taghū min faḍli l-lahi wa-udh'kurū l-laha kathīran laʿallakum tuf'liḥūna
And when the prayer has been concluded, disperse within the land and seek from the bounty of Allah, and remember Allah often that you may succeed
Verse 62:11
وَاِذَا رَاَوۡا تِجَارَةً اَوۡ لَهۡوَا اِۨنۡفَضُّوۡ٘ا اِلَيۡهَا وَتَرَكُوۡكَ قَآئِمًاؕ قُلۡ مَا عِنۡدَ اللّٰهِ خَيۡرٌ مِّنَ اللَّهۡوِ وَمِنَ التِّجَارَةِؕ وَاللّٰهُ خَيۡرُ الرّٰزِقِيۡنَࣖ
But when they saw a transaction or a diversion, [O Muhammad], they rushed to it and left you standing. Say, "What is with Allah is better than diversion and than a transaction, and Allah is the best of providers
