Surah As-Saff (Arabic: سورة As-Saff, "The Ranks") is the 61 chapter (surah) of the Qur'an, containing 14 verses (ayahs). It is classified as a Medinan Surah, meaning it is historically understood to have been revealed during the Medinan Period (622–632 CE) of the prophecy.
Introduction
Surah As-Saff ("The Ranks") is chapter 61 of 114 in the Qur'an. The full Arabic text, English translation and transliteration of all 14 verses are given below, with verse-by-verse Tafsir available on each ayah.
Text and Translation
Verse 61:1
سَبَّحَ لِلّٰهِ مَا فِي السَّمٰوٰتِ وَمَا فِي الۡاَرۡضِۚ وَهُوَ الۡعَزِيۡزُ الۡحَكِيۡمُ
sabbaḥa lillahi mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi wahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīmu
Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth exalts Allah, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise
Verse 61:2
يٰ٘اَيُّهَا الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا لِمَ تَقُوۡلُوۡنَ مَا لَا تَفۡعَلُوۡنَ
yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū lima taqūlūna mā lā tafʿalūna
O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do
Verse 61:3
كَبُرَ مَقۡتًا عِنۡدَ اللّٰهِ اَنۡ تَقُوۡلُوۡا مَا لَا تَفۡعَلُوۡنَ
kabura maqtan ʿinda l-lahi an taqūlū mā lā tafʿalūna
Great is hatred in the sight of Allah that you say what you do not do
Verse 61:4
اِنَّ اللّٰهَ يُحِبُّ الَّذِيۡنَ يُقَاتِلُوۡنَ فِيۡ سَبِيۡلِهٖ صَفًّا كَاَنَّهُمۡ بُنۡيَانٌ مَّرۡصُوۡصٌ
inna l-laha yuḥibbu alladhīna yuqātilūna fī sabīlihi ṣaffan ka-annahum bun'yānun marṣūṣun
Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in a row as though they are a [single] structure joined firmly
Verse 61:5
وَاِذۡ قَالَ مُوۡسٰي لِقَوۡمِهٖ يٰقَوۡمِ لِمَ تُؤۡذُوۡنَنِيۡ وَقَدۡ تَّعۡلَمُوۡنَ اَنِّيۡ رَسُوۡلُ اللّٰهِ اِلَيۡكُمۡؕ فَلَمَّا زَاغُوۡ٘ا اَزَاغَ اللّٰهُ قُلُوۡبَهُمۡؕ وَاللّٰهُ لَا يَهۡدِي الۡقَوۡمَ الۡفٰسِقِيۡنَ
wa-idh qāla mūsā liqawmihi yāqawmi lima tu'dhūnanī waqad taʿlamūna annī rasūlu l-lahi ilaykum falammā zāghū azāgha l-lahu qulūbahum wal-lahu lā yahdī l-qawma l-fāsiqīna
And [mention, O Muhammad], when Moses said to his people, "O my people, why do you harm me while you certainly know that I am the messenger of Allah to you?" And when they deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate. And Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people
Verse 61:6
وَاِذۡ قَالَ عِيۡسَي ابۡنُ مَرۡيَمَ يٰبَنِيۡ٘ اِسۡرَآءِيۡلَ اِنِّيۡ رَسُوۡلُ اللّٰهِ اِلَيۡكُمۡ مُّصَدِّقًا لِّمَا بَيۡنَ يَدَيَّ مِنَ التَّوۡرٰىةِ وَمُبَشِّرًاۭ بِرَسُوۡلٍ يَّاۡتِيۡ مِنۭۡ بَعۡدِي اسۡمُهٗ٘ اَحۡمَدُؕ فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُمۡ بِالۡبَيِّنٰتِ قَالُوۡا هٰذَا سِحۡرٌ مُّبِيۡنٌ
wa-idh qāla ʿīsā ub'nu maryama yābanī is'rāīla innī rasūlu l-lahi ilaykum muṣaddiqan limā bayna yadayya mina l-tawrāti wamubashiran birasūlin yatī min baʿdī us'muhu aḥmadu falammā jāahum bil-bayināti qālū hādhā siḥ'run mubīnun
And [mention] when Jesus, the son of Mary, said, "O children of Israel, indeed I am the messenger of Allah to you confirming what came before me of the Torah and bringing good tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name is Ahmad." But when he came to them with clear evidences, they said, "This is obvious magic
Verse 61:7
وَمَنۡ اَظۡلَمُ مِمَّنِ افۡتَرٰي عَلَي اللّٰهِ الۡكَذِبَ وَهُوَ يُدۡعٰ٘ي اِلَي الۡاِسۡلَامِؕ وَاللّٰهُ لَا يَهۡدِي الۡقَوۡمَ الظّٰلِمِيۡنَۚ
waman aẓlamu mimmani if'tarā ʿalā l-lahi l-kadhiba wahuwa yud'ʿā ilā l-is'lāmi wal-lahu lā yahdī l-qawma l-ẓālimīna
And who is more unjust than one who invents about Allah untruth while he is being invited to Islam. And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people
Verse 61:8
يُرِيۡدُوۡنَ لِيُطۡفِـُٔوۡا نُوۡرَ اللّٰهِ بِاَفۡوَاهِهِمۡؕ وَاللّٰهُ مُتِمُّ نُوۡرِهٖ وَلَوۡ كَرِهَ الۡكٰفِرُوۡنَ
yurīdūna liyuṭ'fiū nūra l-lahi bi-afwāhihim wal-lahu mutimmu nūrihi walaw kariha l-kāfirūna
They want to extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah will perfect His light, although the disbelievers dislike it
Verse 61:9
هُوَ الَّذِيۡ٘ اَرۡسَلَ رَسُوۡلَهٗ بِالۡهُدٰي وَدِيۡنِ الۡحَقِّ لِيُظۡهِرَهٗ عَلَي الدِّيۡنِ كُلِّهٖۙ وَلَوۡ كَرِهَ الۡمُشۡرِكُوۡنَࣖ
huwa alladhī arsala rasūlahu bil-hudā wadīni l-ḥaqi liyuẓ'hirahu ʿalā l-dīni kullihi walaw kariha l-mush'rikūna
It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion, although those who associate others with Allah dislike it
Verse 61:10
يٰ٘اَيُّهَا الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا هَلۡ اَدُلُّكُمۡ عَلٰي تِجَارَةٍ تُنۡجِيۡكُمۡ مِّنۡ عَذَابٍ اَلِيۡمٍ
yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū hal adullukum ʿalā tijāratin tunjīkum min ʿadhābin alīmin
O you who have believed, shall I guide you to a transaction that will save you from a painful punishment
Verse 61:11
تُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ بِاللّٰهِ وَرَسُوۡلِهٖ وَتُجَاهِدُوۡنَ فِيۡ سَبِيۡلِ اللّٰهِ بِاَمۡوَالِكُمۡ وَاَنۡفُسِكُمۡؕ ذٰلِكُمۡ خَيۡرٌ لَّكُمۡ اِنۡ كُنۡتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُوۡنَۙ
[It is that] you believe in Allah and His Messenger and strive in the cause of Allah with your wealth and your lives. That is best for you, if you should know
Verse 61:12
يَغۡفِرۡ لَكُمۡ ذُنُوۡبَكُمۡ وَيُدۡخِلۡكُمۡ جَنّٰتٍ تَجۡرِيۡ مِنۡ تَحۡتِهَا الۡاَنۡهٰرُ وَمَسٰكِنَ طَيِّبَةً فِيۡ جَنّٰتِ عَدۡنٍؕ ذٰلِكَ الۡفَوۡزُ الۡعَظِيۡمُۙ
He will forgive for you your sins and admit you to gardens beneath which rivers flow and pleasant dwellings in gardens of perpetual residence. That is the great attainment
Verse 61:13
وَاُخۡرٰي تُحِبُّوۡنَهَاؕ نَصۡرٌ مِّنَ اللّٰهِ وَفَتۡحٌ قَرِيۡبٌؕ وَبَشِّرِ الۡمُؤۡمِنِيۡنَ
And [you will obtain] another [favor] that you love - victory from Allah and an imminent conquest; and give good tidings to the believers
Verse 61:14
يٰ٘اَيُّهَا الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا كُوۡنُوۡ٘ا اَنۡصَارَ اللّٰهِ كَمَا قَالَ عِيۡسَي ابۡنُ مَرۡيَمَ لِلۡحَوَارِيّٖنَ مَنۡ اَنۡصَارِيۡ٘ اِلَي اللّٰهِؕ قَالَ الۡحَوَارِيُّوۡنَ نَحۡنُ اَنۡصَارُ اللّٰهِ فَاٰمَنَتۡ طَّآئِفَةٌ مِّنۭۡ بَنِيۡ٘ اِسۡرَآءِيۡلَ وَكَفَرَتۡ طَّآئِفَةٌۚ فَاَيَّدۡنَا الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا عَلٰي عَدُوِّهِمۡ فَاَصۡبَحُوۡا ظٰهِرِيۡنَࣖ
O you who have believed, be supporters of Allah, as when Jesus, the son of Mary, said to the disciples, "Who are my supporters for Allah?" The disciples said, "We are supporters of Allah." And a faction of the Children of Israel believed and a faction disbelieved. So We supported those who believed against their enemy, and they became dominant
