Surah Ar-Rahman (Arabic: سورة Ar-Rahman, "The Beneficent") is the 55 chapter (surah) of the Qur'an, containing 78 verses (ayahs). It is classified as a Meccan Surah, meaning it is historically understood to have been revealed during the Meccan Period (610–622 CE) of the prophecy.

Introduction

Surah Ar-Rahman ("The Beneficent") is chapter 55 of 114 in the Qur'an. The full Arabic text, English translation and transliteration of all 78 verses are given below, with verse-by-verse Tafsir available on each ayah.

Text and Translation

Verse 55:1

اَلرَّحۡمٰنُۙ‏

al-raḥmānu

The Most Merciful

Verse 55:2

عَلَّمَ الۡقُرۡاٰنَؕ‏

ʿallama l-qur'āna

Taught the Qur'an

Verse 55:3

خَلَقَ الۡاِنۡسَانَۙ‏

khalaqa l-insāna

Created man

Verse 55:4

عَلَّمَهُ الۡبَيَانَ

ʿallamahu l-bayāna

[And] taught him eloquence

Verse 55:5

اَلشَّمۡسُ وَالۡقَمَرُ بِحُسۡبَانٍۙ‏

al-shamsu wal-qamaru biḥus'bānin

The sun and the moon [move] by precise calculation

Verse 55:6

وَّالنَّجۡمُ وَالشَّجَرُ يَسۡجُدٰنِ

wal-najmu wal-shajaru yasjudāni

And the stars and trees prostrate

Verse 55:7

وَالسَّمَآءَ رَفَعَهَا وَوَضَعَ الۡمِيۡزَانَۙ‏

wal-samāa rafaʿahā wawaḍaʿa l-mīzāna

And the heaven He raised and imposed the balance

Verse 55:8

اَلَّا تَطۡغَوۡا فِي الۡمِيۡزَانِ

allā taṭghaw fī l-mīzāni

That you not transgress within the balance

Verse 55:9

وَاَقِيۡمُوا الۡوَزۡنَ بِالۡقِسۡطِ وَلَا تُخۡسِرُوا الۡمِيۡزَانَ

wa-aqīmū l-wazna bil-qis'ṭi walā tukh'sirū l-mīzāna

And establish weight in justice and do not make deficient the balance

Verse 55:10

وَالۡاَرۡضَ وَضَعَهَا لِلۡاَنَامِۙ‏

wal-arḍa waḍaʿahā lil'anāmi

And the earth He laid [out] for the creatures

Verse 55:11

فِيۡهَا فَاكِهَةٌ وَّالنَّخۡلُ ذَاتُ الۡاَكۡمَامِۖ‏

Therein is fruit and palm trees having sheaths [of dates]

Verse 55:12

وَالۡحَبُّ ذُو الۡعَصۡفِ وَالرَّيۡحَانُۚ‏

And grain having husks and scented plants

Verse 55:13

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:14

خَلَقَ الۡاِنۡسَانَ مِنۡ صَلۡصَالٍ كَالۡفَخَّارِۙ‏

He created man from clay like [that of] pottery

Verse 55:15

وَخَلَقَ الۡجَآنَّ مِنۡ مَّارِجٍ مِّنۡ نَّارٍۚ‏

And He created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire

Verse 55:16

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:17

رَبُّ الۡمَشۡرِقَيۡنِ وَرَبُّ الۡمَغۡرِبَيۡنِۚ‏

[He is] Lord of the two sunrises and Lord of the two sunsets

Verse 55:18

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:19

مَرَجَ الۡبَحۡرَيۡنِ يَلۡتَقِيٰنِۙ‏

He released the two seas, meeting [side by side]

Verse 55:20

بَيۡنَهُمَا بَرۡزَخٌ لَّا يَبۡغِيٰنِۚ‏

Between them is a barrier [so] neither of them transgresses

Verse 55:21

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:22

يَخۡرُجُ مِنۡهُمَا اللُّؤۡلُؤُ وَالۡمَرۡجَانُۚ‏

From both of them emerge pearl and coral

Verse 55:23

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:24

وَلَهُ الۡجَوَارِ الۡمُنۡشَاٰتُ فِي الۡبَحۡرِ كَالۡاَعۡلَامِۚ‏

And to Him belong the ships [with sails] elevated in the sea like mountains

Verse 55:25

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِࣖ‏

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:26

كُلُّ مَنۡ عَلَيۡهَا فَانٍۚۖ‏

Everyone upon the earth will perish

Verse 55:27

وَّيَبۡقٰي وَجۡهُ رَبِّكَ ذُو الۡجَلٰلِ وَالۡاِكۡرَامِۚ‏

And there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor

Verse 55:28

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:29

يَسۡـَٔلُهٗ مَنۡ فِي السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضِؕ كُلَّ يَوۡمٍ هُوَ فِيۡ شَاۡنٍۚ‏

Whoever is within the heavens and earth asks Him; every day He is bringing about a matter

Verse 55:30

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:31

سَنَفۡرُغُ لَكُمۡ اَيُّهَ الثَّقَلٰنِۚ‏

We will attend to you, O prominent beings

Verse 55:32

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:33

يٰمَعۡشَرَ الۡجِنِّ وَالۡاِنۡسِ اِنِ اسۡتَطَعۡتُمۡ اَنۡ تَنۡفُذُوۡا مِنۡ اَقۡطَارِ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضِ فَانۡفُذُوۡاؕ لَا تَنۡفُذُوۡنَ اِلَّا بِسُلۡطٰنٍۚ‏

O company of jinn and mankind, if you are able to pass beyond the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass. You will not pass except by authority [from Allah]

Verse 55:34

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:35

يُرۡسَلُ عَلَيۡكُمَا شُوَاظٌ مِّنۡ نَّارٍ ࣢ۙ وَّنُحَاسٌ فَلَا تَنۡتَصِرٰنِۚ‏

There will be sent upon you a flame of fire and smoke, and you will not defend yourselves

Verse 55:36

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:37

فَاِذَا انۡشَقَّتِ السَّمَآءُ فَكَانَتۡ وَرۡدَةً كَالدِّهَانِۚ‏

And when the heaven is split open and becomes rose-colored like oil

Verse 55:38

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:39

فَيَوۡمَئِذٍ لَّا يُسۡـَٔلُ عَنۡ ذَنۭۡ بِهٖ٘ اِنۡسٌ وَّلَا جَآنٌّۚ‏

Then on that Day none will be asked about his sin among men or jinn

Verse 55:40

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:41

يُعۡرَفُ الۡمُجۡرِمُوۡنَ بِسِيۡمٰهُمۡ فَيُؤۡخَذُ بِالنَّوَاصِيۡ وَالۡاَقۡدَامِۚ‏

The criminals will be known by their marks, and they will be seized by the forelocks and the feet

Verse 55:42

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:43

هٰذِهٖ جَهَنَّمُ الَّتِيۡ يُكَذِّبُ بِهَا الۡمُجۡرِمُوۡنَۘ‏

This is Hell, which the criminals deny

Verse 55:44

يَطُوۡفُوۡنَ بَيۡنَهَا وَبَيۡنَ حَمِيۡمٍ اٰنٍۚ‏

They will go around between it and scalding water, heated [to the utmost degree]

Verse 55:45

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِࣖ‏

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:46

وَلِمَنۡ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهٖ جَنَّتٰنِۚ‏

But for he who has feared the position of his Lord are two gardens

Verse 55:47

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِۙ‏

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:48

ذَوَاتَا٘ اَفۡنَانٍۚ‏

Having [spreading] branches

Verse 55:49

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:50

فِيۡهِمَا عَيۡنٰنِ تَجۡرِيٰنِۚ‏

In both of them are two springs, flowing

Verse 55:51

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:52

فِيۡهِمَا مِنۡ كُلِّ فَاكِهَةٍ زَوۡجٰنِۚ‏

In both of them are of every fruit, two kinds

Verse 55:53

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:54

مُتَّكِـِٕيۡنَ عَلٰي فُرُشٍۭ بَطَآئِنُهَا مِنۡ اِسۡتَبۡرَقٍؕ وَجَنَا الۡجَنَّتَيۡنِ دَانٍۚ‏

[They are] reclining on beds whose linings are of silk brocade, and the fruit of the two gardens is hanging low

Verse 55:55

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:56

فِيۡهِنَّ قٰصِرٰتُ الطَّرۡفِۙ لَمۡ يَطۡمِثۡهُنَّ اِنۡسٌ قَبۡلَهُمۡ وَلَا جَآنٌّۚ‏

In them are women limiting [their] glances, untouched before them by man or jinni

Verse 55:57

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:58

كَاَنَّهُنَّ الۡيَاقُوۡتُ وَالۡمَرۡجَانُۚ‏

As if they were rubies and coral

Verse 55:59

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:60

هَلۡ جَزَآءُ الۡاِحۡسَانِ اِلَّا الۡاِحۡسَانُۚ‏

Is the reward for good [anything] but good

Verse 55:61

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:62

وَمِنۡ دُوۡنِهِمَا جَنَّتٰنِۚ‏

And below them both [in excellence] are two [other] gardens

Verse 55:63

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِۙ‏

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:64

مُدۡهَآمَّتٰنِۚ‏

Dark green [in color]

Verse 55:65

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِۚ‏

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:66

فِيۡهِمَا عَيۡنٰنِ نَضَّاخَتٰنِۚ‏

In both of them are two springs, spouting

Verse 55:67

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِۚ‏

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:68

فِيۡهِمَا فَاكِهَةٌ وَّنَخۡلٌ وَّرُمَّانٌۚ‏

In both of them are fruit and palm trees and pomegranates

Verse 55:69

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِۚ‏

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:70

فِيۡهِنَّ خَيۡرٰتٌ حِسَانٌۚ‏

In them are good and beautiful women

Verse 55:71

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:72

حُوۡرٌ مَّقۡصُوۡرٰتٌ فِي الۡخِيَامِۚ‏

Fair ones reserved in pavilions

Verse 55:73

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:74

لَمۡ يَطۡمِثۡهُنَّ اِنۡسٌ قَبۡلَهُمۡ وَلَا جَآنٌّۚ‏

Untouched before them by man or jinni

Verse 55:75

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:76

مُتَّكِـِٕيۡنَ عَلٰي رَفۡرَفٍ خُضۡرٍ وَّعَبۡقَرِيٍّ حِسَانٍۚ‏

Reclining on green cushions and beautiful fine carpets

Verse 55:77

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny

Verse 55:78

تَبٰرَكَ اسۡمُ رَبِّكَ ذِي الۡجَلٰلِ وَالۡاِكۡرَامِࣖ‏

Blessed is the name of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor
