Surah Ad-Dukhan (Arabic: سورة Ad-Dukhan, "The Smoke") is the 44 chapter (surah) of the Qur'an, containing 59 verses (ayahs). It is classified as a Meccan Surah, meaning it is historically understood to have been revealed during the Meccan Period (610–622 CE) of the prophecy.
Introduction
Surah Ad-Dukhan ("The Smoke") is chapter 44 of 114 in the Qur'an. The full Arabic text, English translation and transliteration of all 59 verses are given below, with verse-by-verse Tafsir available on each ayah.
Text and Translation
Verse 44:1
حٰمٓۚۛ
hha-meem
Ha, Meem
Verse 44:2
وَالۡكِتٰبِ الۡمُبِيۡنِۙۛ
wal-kitābi l-mubīni
By the clear Book
Verse 44:3
اِنَّا٘ اَنۡزَلۡنٰهُ فِيۡ لَيۡلَةٍ مُّبٰرَكَةٍ اِنَّا كُنَّا مُنۡذِرِيۡنَ
innā anzalnāhu fī laylatin mubārakatin innā kunnā mundhirīna
Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]
Verse 44:4
فِيۡهَا يُفۡرَقُ كُلُّ اَمۡرٍ حَكِيۡمٍۙ
fīhā yuf'raqu kullu amrin ḥakīmin
On that night is made distinct every precise matter
Verse 44:5
اَمۡرًا مِّنۡ عِنۡدِنَاؕ اِنَّا كُنَّا مُرۡسِلِيۡنَۚ
amran min ʿindinā innā kunnā mur'silīna
[Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger]
Verse 44:6
رَحۡمَةً مِّنۡ رَّبِّكَؕ اِنَّهٗ هُوَ السَّمِيۡعُ الۡعَلِيۡمُۙ
raḥmatan min rabbika innahu huwa l-samīʿu l-ʿalīmu
As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing
Verse 44:7
رَبِّ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضِ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَاۘ اِنۡ كُنۡتُمۡ مُّوۡقِنِيۡنَ
rabbi l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā baynahumā in kuntum mūqinīna
Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain
Verse 44:8
لَا٘ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَ يُحۡيٖ وَيُمِيۡتُؕ رَبُّكُمۡ وَرَبُّ اٰبَآئِكُمُ الۡاَوَّلِيۡنَ
lā ilāha illā huwa yuḥ'yī wayumītu rabbukum warabbu ābāikumu l-awalīna
There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers
Verse 44:9
بَلۡ هُمۡ فِيۡ شَكٍّ يَّلۡعَبُوۡنَ
bal hum fī shakkin yalʿabūna
But they are in doubt, amusing themselves
Verse 44:10
فَارۡتَقِبۡ يَوۡمَ تَاۡتِي السَّمَآءُ بِدُخَانٍ مُّبِيۡنٍۙ
fa-ir'taqib yawma tatī l-samāu bidukhānin mubīnin
Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke
Verse 44:11
يَّغۡشَي النَّاسَؕ هٰذَا عَذَابٌ اَلِيۡمٌ
Covering the people; this is a painful torment
Verse 44:12
رَبَّنَا اكۡشِفۡ عَنَّا الۡعَذَابَ اِنَّا مُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ
[They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers
Verse 44:13
اَنّٰي لَهُمُ الذِّكۡرٰي وَقَدۡ جَآءَهُمۡ رَسُوۡلٌ مُّبِيۡنٌۙ
How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger
Verse 44:14
ثُمَّ تَوَلَّوۡا عَنۡهُ وَقَالُوۡا مُعَلَّمٌ مَّجۡنُوۡنٌۘ
Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman
Verse 44:15
اِنَّا كَاشِفُوا الۡعَذَابِ قَلِيۡلًا اِنَّكُمۡ عَآئِدُوۡنَۘ
Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief]
Verse 44:16
يَوۡمَ نَبۡطِشُ الۡبَطۡشَةَ الۡكُبۡرٰيۚ اِنَّا مُنۡتَقِمُوۡنَ
The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution
Verse 44:17
وَلَقَدۡ فَتَنَّا قَبۡلَهُمۡ قَوۡمَ فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَجَآءَهُمۡ رَسُوۡلٌ كَرِيۡمٌۙ
And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger
Verse 44:18
اَنۡ اَدُّوۡ٘ا اِلَيَّ عِبَادَ اللّٰهِؕ اِنِّيۡ لَكُمۡ رَسُوۡلٌ اَمِيۡنٌۙ
[Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger
Verse 44:19
وَّاَنۡ لَّا تَعۡلُوۡا عَلَي اللّٰهِؕ اِنِّيۡ٘ اٰتِيۡكُمۡ بِسُلۡطٰنٍ مُّبِيۡنٍۚ
And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority
Verse 44:20
وَاِنِّيۡ عُذۡتُ بِرَبِّيۡ وَرَبِّكُمۡ اَنۡ تَرۡجُمُوۡنِۚ
And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me
Verse 44:21
وَاِنۡ لَّمۡ تُؤۡمِنُوۡا لِيۡ فَاعۡتَزِلُوۡنِ
But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone
Verse 44:22
فَدَعَا رَبَّهٗ٘ اَنَّ هٰ٘ؤُلَآءِ قَوۡمٌ مُّجۡرِمُوۡنَ
And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people
Verse 44:23
فَاَسۡرِ بِعِبَادِيۡ لَيۡلًا اِنَّكُمۡ مُّتَّبَعُوۡنَۙ
[Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued
Verse 44:24
وَاتۡرُكِ الۡبَحۡرَ رَهۡوًاؕ اِنَّهُمۡ جُنۡدٌ مُّغۡرَقُوۡنَ
And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned
Verse 44:25
كَمۡ تَرَكُوۡا مِنۡ جَنّٰتٍ وَّعُيُوۡنٍۙ
How much they left behind of gardens and springs
Verse 44:26
وَّزُرُوۡعٍ وَّمَقَامٍ كَرِيۡمٍۙ
And crops and noble sites
Verse 44:27
وَّنَعۡمَةٍ كَانُوۡا فِيۡهَا فٰكِهِيۡنَۙ
And comfort wherein they were amused
Verse 44:28
كَذٰلِكَࣞ وَاَوۡرَثۡنٰهَا قَوۡمًا اٰخَرِيۡنَ
Thus. And We caused to inherit it another people
Verse 44:29
فَمَا بَكَتۡ عَلَيۡهِمُ السَّمَآءُ وَالۡاَرۡضُ وَمَا كَانُوۡا مُنۡظَرِيۡنَࣖ
And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved
Verse 44:30
وَلَقَدۡ نَجَّيۡنَا بَنِيۡ٘ اِسۡرَآءِيۡلَ مِنَ الۡعَذَابِ الۡمُهِيۡنِۙ
And We certainly saved the Children of Israel from the humiliating torment
Verse 44:31
مِنۡ فِرۡعَوۡنَؕ اِنَّهٗ كَانَ عَالِيًا مِّنَ الۡمُسۡرِفِيۡنَ
From Pharaoh. Indeed, he was a haughty one among the transgressors
Verse 44:32
وَلَقَدِ اخۡتَرۡنٰهُمۡ عَلٰي عِلۡمٍ عَلَي الۡعٰلَمِيۡنَۚ
And We certainly chose them by knowledge over [all] the worlds
Verse 44:33
وَاٰتَيۡنٰهُمۡ مِّنَ الۡاٰيٰتِ مَا فِيۡهِ بَلٰٓؤٌا مُّبِيۡنٌ
And We gave them of signs that in which there was a clear trial
Verse 44:34
اِنَّ هٰ٘ؤُلَآءِ لَيَقُوۡلُوۡنَۙ
Indeed, these [disbelievers] are saying
Verse 44:35
اِنۡ هِيَ اِلَّا مَوۡتَتُنَا الۡاُوۡلٰي وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُنۡشَرِيۡنَ
There is not but our first death, and we will not be resurrected
Verse 44:36
فَاۡتُوۡا بِاٰبَآئِنَا٘ اِنۡ كُنۡتُمۡ صٰدِقِيۡنَ
Then bring [back] our forefathers, if you should be truthful
Verse 44:37
اَهُمۡ خَيۡرٌ اَمۡ قَوۡمُ تُبَّعٍۙ وَّالَّذِيۡنَ مِنۡ قَبۡلِهِمۡؕ اَهۡلَكۡنٰهُمۡؗ اِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوۡا مُجۡرِمِيۡنَ
Are they better or the people of Tubba' and those before them? We destroyed them, [for] indeed, they were criminals
Verse 44:38
وَمَا خَلَقۡنَا السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضَ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَا لٰعِبِيۡنَ
And We did not create the heavens and earth and that between them in play
Verse 44:39
مَا خَلَقۡنٰهُمَا٘ اِلَّا بِالۡحَقِّ وَلٰكِنَّ اَكۡثَرَهُمۡ لَا يَعۡلَمُوۡنَ
We did not create them except in truth, but most of them do not know
Verse 44:40
اِنَّ يَوۡمَ الۡفَصۡلِ مِيۡقَاتُهُمۡ اَجۡمَعِيۡنَۙ
Indeed, the Day of Judgement is the appointed time for them all
Verse 44:41
يَوۡمَ لَا يُغۡنِيۡ مَوۡلًي عَنۡ مَّوۡلًي شَيۡـًٔا وَّلَا هُمۡ يُنۡصَرُوۡنَۙ
The Day when no relation will avail a relation at all, nor will they be helped
Verse 44:42
اِلَّا مَنۡ رَّحِمَ اللّٰهُؕ اِنَّهٗ هُوَ الۡعَزِيۡزُ الرَّحِيۡمُࣖ
Except those [believers] on whom Allah has mercy. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful
Verse 44:43
اِنَّ شَجَرَتَ الزَّقُّوۡمِۙ
Indeed, the tree of zaqqum
Verse 44:44
طَعَامُ الۡاَثِيۡمِۚۛۖ
Is food for the sinful
Verse 44:45
كَالۡمُهۡلِۚۛ يَغۡلِيۡ فِي الۡبُطُوۡنِۙ
Like murky oil, it boils within bellies
Verse 44:46
كَغَلۡيِ الۡحَمِيۡمِ
Like the boiling of scalding water
Verse 44:47
خُذُوۡهُ فَاعۡتِلُوۡهُ اِلٰي سَوَآءِ الۡجَحِيۡمِۙ
[It will be commanded], "Seize him and drag him into the midst of the Hellfire
Verse 44:48
ثُمَّ صُبُّوۡا فَوۡقَ رَاۡسِهٖ مِنۡ عَذَابِ الۡحَمِيۡمِؕ
Then pour over his head from the torment of scalding water
Verse 44:49
ذُقۡۚۖ اِنَّكَ اَنۡتَ الۡعَزِيۡزُ الۡكَرِيۡمُ
[It will be said], "Taste! Indeed, you are the honored, the noble
Verse 44:50
اِنَّ هٰذَا مَا كُنۡتُمۡ بِهٖ تَمۡتَرُوۡنَ
Indeed, this is what you used to dispute
Verse 44:51
اِنَّ الۡمُتَّقِيۡنَ فِيۡ مَقَامٍ اَمِيۡنٍۙ
Indeed, the righteous will be in a secure place
Verse 44:52
فِيۡ جَنّٰتٍ وَّعُيُوۡنٍۚۙ
Within gardens and springs
Verse 44:53
يَّلۡبَسُوۡنَ مِنۡ سُنۡدُسٍ وَّاِسۡتَبۡرَقٍ مُّتَقٰبِلِيۡنَۚۙ
Wearing [garments of] fine silk and brocade, facing each other
Verse 44:54
كَذٰلِكَࣞ وَزَوَّجۡنٰهُمۡ بِحُوۡرٍ عِيۡنٍؕ
Thus. And We will marry them to fair women with large, [beautiful] eyes
Verse 44:55
يَدۡعُوۡنَ فِيۡهَا بِكُلِّ فَاكِهَةٍ اٰمِنِيۡنَۙ
They will call therein for every [kind of] fruit - safe and secure
Verse 44:56
لَا يَذُوۡقُوۡنَ فِيۡهَا الۡمَوۡتَ اِلَّا الۡمَوۡتَةَ الۡاُوۡلٰيۚ وَوَقٰىهُمۡ عَذَابَ الۡجَحِيۡمِۙ
They will not taste death therein except the first death, and He will have protected them from the punishment of Hellfire
Verse 44:57
فَضۡلًا مِّنۡ رَّبِّكَؕ ذٰلِكَ هُوَ الۡفَوۡزُ الۡعَظِيۡمُ
As bounty from your Lord. That is what is the great attainment
Verse 44:58
فَاِنَّمَا يَسَّرۡنٰهُ بِلِسَانِكَ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَتَذَكَّرُوۡنَ
And indeed, We have eased the Qur'an in your tongue that they might be reminded
Verse 44:59
فَارۡتَقِبۡ اِنَّهُمۡ مُّرۡتَقِبُوۡنَࣖ
So watch, [O Muhammad]; indeed, they are watching [for your end]
